Iran's Naval Operation in Strait of Hormuz Affects 22 Indian Sailors

Incident Overview

In New Delhi, it was reported that during a naval operation in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, two vessels were seized by Iran, resulting in the involvement of 22 Indian sailors. These sailors were aboard the two ships, as confirmed by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways on Thursday. The Indian government expressed its concern for the safety of these sailors, stating that all 22 are currently safe.


Details of the Ships and Crew

According to reports, one sailor was on the vessel named Epaminondas, while the remaining 21 were aboard the Euphoria. Mukesh Mangal, the additional secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, confirmed that all sailors on both ships are unharmed.


Tensions in the Region

The Iranian military had taken control of two container ships, Francesca and Epaminondas, as they attempted to exit the Strait. Additionally, gunfire was reported on the third ship, Euphoria, escalating tensions in this strategic waterway.


Safety Confirmed for Indian Crew

The crew of Epaminondas included one Indian national, and the ship was flagged under Panama, heading towards India. Mangal stated that contact had been established with the sailor, confirming his safety. He added, 'We have communicated with the relevant authorities, and he is safe.'


Government's Ongoing Concerns

The Ministry of Shipping expressed its worries regarding the Indian sailors operating near the Strait of Hormuz, especially following reports of gunfire on vessels in the area. However, officials confirmed that no Indian sailors were injured. The ministry also noted that since the onset of the conflict in Iran on February 28, at least 2,680 Indian sailors have been safely evacuated.
