Iran's Foreign Minister Shares Insights on Attack and Leadership Transition
Surviving the Attack on the Supreme Leader's Office
In a recent statement, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi disclosed that he narrowly escaped an assault on the office of the late Supreme Leader during the initial hours of coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel. Reflecting on the event, Araghchi described how he emerged from the debris of the targeted structure, expressing concern for the Supreme Leader's well-being immediately after the attack, as reported by Iranian state media. In an exclusive interview with a Lebanon-based television channel, he recounted being present in Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's office during the February 28 strike, which sent shockwaves throughout Iran. "At the moment of his martyrdom, I was in the office that was attacked," Araghchi recalled, emphasizing his immediate worry for the Leader's condition. He mentioned that he spent two days uncertain about Khamenei's fate, noting that the regime prioritized evacuation and rescue operations over the destruction caused by the assault.
Khamenei's Commitment to Iranian Safety
During the interview, Araghchi highlighted Khamenei's refusal to relocate to a safer area despite numerous requests, stating that the Supreme Leader insisted on remaining in place until every Iranian citizen had access to safety. "I will not go to a shelter or to a secure location unless every member of the Iranian people also has access to a safe place. Whatever happens to my people will happen to me as well," Araghchi quoted Khamenei.
Tehran's Stance on Retaliation
Araghchi also discussed Tehran's warnings to neighboring states prior to the escalation of conflict, asserting that during his visits to Persian Gulf nations, he made it clear that any use of American military bases in attacks against Iran would provoke a response. "Had these US bases not been present in Iran's neighboring countries, they would not have come under Iran's retaliation," he stated.
Unexpected Military Response
The Iranian Foreign Minister further elaborated on Iran's military response to the US-Israel strikes, claiming that it took adversaries, including US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, by surprise. "No one anticipated Iran's immediate and powerful retaliation despite the scale of the assault," he remarked.
Leadership Transition in Iran
When asked about the transition of leadership in Iran, Araghchi confirmed that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, now holds significant authority within the Islamic Republic. "Sayyed Mojtaba Khamenei has a highly influential and strong presence in the country's ongoing affairs and holds full control over the reins of authority," he stated, adding that communication with the new Supreme Leader is consistent and that his directives are effectively communicated to officials.
