Iran Prepares for Potential US Ground Invasion Amid Rising Tensions
Iran's Stance on US Military Threats
Tehran: In light of escalating conflicts in the Middle East, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressed on Thursday that Iran is bracing for a possible ground invasion by the United States. During an interview with NBC News, he was questioned about the potential for US military action against Iran, to which he responded, "We are waiting for them." Araghchi conveyed confidence in Iran's ability to confront US forces, labeling any such engagement as a potential "disaster" for the United States. He emphasized, "We are prepared for any eventuality. Our soldiers are ready for any scenario. When I mentioned we are waiting for them, it does not imply we are anticipating the continuation of war. Rather, we have equipped ourselves to face any situation," he stated.
Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump suggested the possibility of deploying ground troops to Iran, indicating he would not dismiss this option if deemed necessary.
Iran's Position on Gulf Nations: When questioned about potential attacks on neighboring Gulf countries, Araghchi clarified that Iran has not targeted its neighbors but has focused on US military bases situated within those nations. He stated, "We have not attacked our neighbors. We have not targeted Muslim countries... Our actions have been directed at American targets and installations, which unfortunately are located on the territories of our neighbors." He also reassured Gulf counterparts that they are not the intended targets of Iranian military actions.
Furthermore, Araghchi downplayed any civilian casualties in Gulf nations, including Bahrain and the UAE, referring to them as "collateral damage."
Strait of Hormuz Accessibility: In contrast to statements made by Brig. Gen. Ebrahim Jabbari of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Araghchi asserted that the Strait of Hormuz remains open to all vessels. Jabbari had previously claimed that any ship approaching the strait would be destroyed. This strait is crucial, with approximately 20 percent of the world's oil supply passing through it.
On February 28, the US and Israel conducted coordinated strikes against Iran, resulting in the deaths of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and key military figures. In response, Iran launched significant attacks on Israeli and US military installations and oil facilities in the Gulf region.
