Tehran's Emotional Farewell

On Friday, the streets of Tehran were filled with sorrow as the nation began to bid farewell to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader who was killed in U.S. and Israeli airstrikes four months prior. A massive crowd gathered at Tehran's Grand Mosalla for what officials have termed the "funeral of the century."

Coffins of the Fallen

One of the most poignant sights was the display of four coffins side by side, each covered with Iran's national flag. Khamenei's coffin was accompanied by the remains of four family members who also perished in the February 28 airstrike, including his eldest daughter, son-in-law, and the spouse of the new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei. The fourth coffin belonged to Khamenei's 14-month-old granddaughter, Zahra Mohammadi Golpayegani, whose small casket drew emotional reactions from mourners.

Tears from Leaders

The sorrow was palpable among officials as well. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was visibly emotional while paying his respects, and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf was seen weeping uncontrollably in front of Khamenei's coffin, a moment captured by state television. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was present alongside him.

International Dignitaries Attend

Several prominent international figures attended the ceremonies, including Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has been involved in mediating peace discussions between the U.S. and Iran. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Afghan Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi were also in attendance. India was represented by Bihar's Governor Syed Ata Hasnain and Deputy Foreign Minister Pabitra Margherita, while China sent He Wei, vice chairperson of the National People's Congress.

Upcoming Ceremonies

This event marks the start of a six-day mourning period. From Saturday, mourners can pay their respects at Tehran's Imam Khomeini Mosalla until Sunday afternoon. An official funeral ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, where Khamenei's coffin will be displayed on an elevated platform, allowing groups of mourners to visit for 15 to 20 minutes each. Authorities anticipate that between 12 and 20 million people will participate in the various ceremonies.

Public and private offices in Tehran will be closed from Saturday to Monday, and many areas of the city will be restricted to vehicles. Tehran's airspace was partially closed on Friday and will be fully shut down on Monday. The ceremonies will then move to Qom for funeral prayers led by a senior Shia cleric, followed by processions in Najaf, Iraq, and finally, Khamenei will be laid to rest in Mashhad at the Imam Reza Shrine. Commemorative events are expected to continue for 40 days, culminating in the first anniversary of his burial.
