Iran's Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, has ridiculed the United States following reports that the Pentagon is requesting over $200 billion to support its ongoing military operations against Iran. He cautioned that the actual expenses could escalate into the trillions, labeling this conflict as a 'war of choice' imposed on both nations. Araghchi emphasized that the $200 billion figure is merely 'the tip of the iceberg.' He further accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his supporters in the US Congress of exacerbating the situation, referring to the impending financial burden as a 'trillion-dollar Israel First tax' on the American economy. 'We are only three weeks into this war of choice, which has been forced upon both Iranians and Americans. Ordinary Americans can thank Benjamin Netanyahu and his allies in Congress for the trillion-dollar tax that is about to impact the US economy,' Araghchi stated in a post on social media.

His comments followed a report from a major news outlet indicating that the Pentagon has requested the White House's approval for a funding proposal exceeding $200 billion to support military actions in Iran, as confirmed by a senior administration official.

Pentagon Seeks Congressional Approval for $200 Billion Funding

According to sources from the major news outlet, the Defense Department has put forth several funding proposals in recent weeks. It remains uncertain which of these requests the White House will present to Congress, with some officials from the Trump administration expressing skepticism about the likelihood of the $200 billion proposal passing. The request would require a minimum of 60 votes in the Senate to overcome a filibuster.

Previously, Pentagon officials informed lawmakers in a private session that the initial six days of military operations in Iran had already cost over $11.3 billion. Reports indicate that more than 7,800 targets have been hit, over 8,000 combat flights conducted, and more than 120 Iranian vessels damaged or destroyed by US military forces during the conflict, as per US Central Command. Additionally, Congress has already allocated $838.5 billion for defense spending in the fiscal year 2026, according to the Senate Appropriations Committee.
