IPS B Sumathi's Bold Initiative for Women's Safety in Hyderabad
A Unique Experiment by IPS B Sumathi
Hyderabad witnessed a remarkable initiative by IPS officer B Sumathi, the police commissioner of Malkajgiri, aimed at understanding the real challenges of women's safety. To assess the safety of city streets for women, she undertook an audacious undercover operation, standing alone at a bus stop in the middle of the night. This special mission took place between 12:30 AM and 3:30 AM.
During this time, Commissioner Sumathi did not have any security or police personnel accompanying her. Dressed in civilian clothes, she waited at the Malkajgiri bus stop to directly experience the challenges women face in public spaces at night, moving beyond mere complaints and paperwork.
In just three hours, around 40 men approached her. According to media reports, many of these individuals were under the influence of alcohol, while some had consumed cannabis. Among them were young men and students, completely unaware that they were interacting with a senior IPS officer.
Emphasis on Counseling Instead of Jail
Following this operation, the police identified all individuals who approached the officer. Instead of filing criminal cases against them, the police invited them for counseling. They were sternly warned about their behavior and educated on the importance of respecting women's safety and dignity in public spaces. The police believe that this initiative aims to foster behavioral change rather than just punitive measures. Notably, this is not the first time Officer B Sumathi has taken such a step; she conducted a similar undercover operation nearly 25 years ago as a Deputy Superintendent of Police near Kazipet railway station.
