IPL 2026 Final Venue Uncertain Due to Political Turmoil
IPL 2026 Final Venue in Jeopardy
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is on the verge of revealing the locations for the IPL 2026 playoffs and final. However, the final's venue remains uncertain. According to BCCI insiders, the playoff matches are likely to be distributed between Punjab and Karnataka, but Bengaluru is facing challenges that may hinder its ability to host the highly anticipated final.
Political Issues Affecting Bengaluru
A BCCI insider mentioned that typically, the defending champions are expected to host the final. Yet, ongoing political issues in Bengaluru, particularly concerning MLA ticket allocations, are causing significant disruptions. The source stated, "The IPL 2026 playoffs and final venue will be announced soon. Matches are likely to be split between Punjab and Karnataka. The last year's winner should host the final, but the MLA ticket situation is problematic in Bengaluru. If unresolved, the BCCI may relocate the final to another city."
MLA Ticket Controversy
Prior to the IPL 2026 opener featuring the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Congress MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar proposed that each MLA should receive a minimum of five IPL tickets, arguing that elected officials are "VIPs" who should not have to queue. Following this, Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced that three tickets for RCB matches during the ongoing IPL would be allocated to MLAs and MPs.
In response to Shivakumar's remarks, Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara refuted claims of IPL ticket misuse by MLAs, clarifying that tickets are purchased online and are attended by the buyers. He emphasized that only the MLAs or their family members can attend the IPL matches at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, as it is clearly stated that tickets are "non-transferable," preventing others from using them.
Current IPL 2026 Points Table
As of May 5, the IPL 2026 points table reflects a highly competitive league stage, with numerous teams vying for playoff positions. The Punjab Kings lead the standings with 13 points from nine matches, showcasing a robust net run rate. Following closely are Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Gujarat Titans, all tied at 12 points but differentiated by net run rate, with RCB holding the best NRR.
In the middle of the table, Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals each have 8 points, maintaining their playoff aspirations while seeking consistency. The Kolkata Knight Riders sit in eighth place with 7 points, still mathematically in the race but facing challenges. At the bottom, the Mumbai Indians have accumulated 6 points from ten games, struggling to secure a top-four finish, while the Lucknow Super Giants are in last place with just 4 points, their playoff chances nearly extinguished.
