Investigation Reveals No Communal Angle in Sribhumi Incident
Overview of the Incident
The incident took place on October 23 after a reported misunderstanding led to an altercation
Guwahati, Oct 26: The recent attack on Bihu performers in Sribhumi appears to have originated from a confrontation among individuals who had been drinking, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Leena Doley, who stated that no communal motives have been identified thus far.
Doley emphasized the importance of not interpreting the incident through a communal lens, noting that the investigation suggests a verbal dispute escalated into physical violence.
“Currently, we have found no evidence indicating a communal motive, and I urge everyone to refrain from viewing this incident as such,” she remarked during a press conference.
“Our findings indicate that a group of individuals had been drinking. A comment was made, leading to a physical confrontation. It seems the altercation occurred in a celebratory atmosphere,” the SSP elaborated.
As of now, authorities have detained 17 individuals related to the incident, including four who were apprehended on Sunday night.
Previously, 13 members of the Hindustan Club, which organized the Bihu performances during the final idol immersion procession, were also arrested.
The incident has sparked significant public outrage, prompting the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) to protest outside the District Commissioner’s Office in Sribhumi on Monday.
Protesters are calling for justice for the affected performers and demanding stringent action against those responsible.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has acknowledged the widespread condemnation of the incident, including reactions from Barak Valley, and confirmed that police actions have been initiated.
“The people of Barak Valley were also upset by this incident. It has been condemned by all, and we have expressed our strong disapproval. The police are taking appropriate measures,” Sarma stated.
Additionally, Minister Krishnendu Paul visited the villages of Bargul and Adarkona in Badarpur to meet with members of the affected Bihu troupe.
He denounced the incident, asserting that Bihu is a vital aspect of Assamese identity and pride.
“Bihu is more than just a festival; it embodies the spirit of Assam and its people. It is a source of pride for every Assamese. This act was committed by a few miscreants, and we completely condemn it. We have engaged with the local community, and the police will take necessary actions. Our message is one of unity; there is no Assamese-Bengali divide; we are all Assamese,” Paul affirmed.
The SSP's remarks aimed to dispel any communal interpretations of the incident, highlighting that the investigation points to an altercation among individuals who had been drinking.
