Forensic Analysis Underway Following DGP's Death

Agartala, July 22: The Tripura Police have initiated a forensic examination of all electronic devices belonging to Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar as part of the investigation into his tragic death, an official confirmed on Wednesday.

Dhankar, who was an IPS officer from the 1994 batch, was discovered hanging in the washroom of his office at the state police headquarters on Monday.

"An unnatural death case has been registered, and the investigation is currently in progress. All electronic devices, including the DGP's mobile phone, laptop, and personal computer, have been confiscated and will be sent to the State Forensic Science Laboratory (SFSL) in Narsingarh, West Tripura, for analysis," stated Investigating Officer Subhrajit Deb.

He added that the forensic analysis of these devices is anticipated to take approximately one and a half months.

"Should the post-mortem report indicate that the DGP died by suicide, the investigation will shift focus to uncovering the factors that may have led him to this tragic decision," Deb noted.

According to a complaint lodged by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Prabir Majumder, he had been waiting for a significant time to meet the DGP on Monday but was unable to gain entry.

"The DGP had instructed his staff to deny visitors access to his room until 11 am on Monday. When Majumder attempted to meet him, the staff did not allow him in. After the DGP failed to return to his desk for an extended period, staff members entered the chamber and found the washroom door locked from the inside. They forced the door open and discovered the DGP hanging from the ventilator," another police officer recounted, referencing the complaint.

Opposition Leader Jitendra Chaudhury reiterated his call for a judicial inquiry into the suspected suicide on Tuesday.

"It is hard to accept that the state's top police official, who has navigated numerous challenging situations throughout his career, would resort to such an extreme action without a significant reason. I was aware that the DGP was experiencing mental stress. I once again urge the government to initiate a judicial investigation to reveal the truth," the CPI(M) leader stated in a video message.

Senior advocate Somik Deb from the Tripura High Court also called for judicial intervention, urging the court to take suo motu cognizance of the situation.

"At first glance, it seems that the DGP died by suicide. The pressing question is what led him to this drastic action. Every detail of the case must be meticulously examined," he emphasized.

Dhankar's remains were transported to Delhi via air ambulance on Tuesday, with his final rites scheduled for Wednesday in his hometown of Baraut, located in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district.
