Investigation into Jail Privileges for Murder Suspect

In Beed, Maharashtra, following allegations that Valmiki Karad, the primary suspect in the murder of Panchayat head Santosh Deshmukh, was receiving special privileges within Beed district jail, the Maharashtra prison department's vigilance teams have initiated separate inquiries. Officials disclosed this information on Friday.

The teams from Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar units of the department inspected the CCTV cameras located near Karad's barrack and seized the digital video recorder (DVR). They also reviewed CCTV footage from areas used by inmates for video and audio calls, collecting data from the past three months.

Dhanshankar Deshmukh, the brother of the deceased Panchayat head, alleged that Karad, who is in judicial custody for the 2024 murder case, was being granted special privileges. The issue gained political traction after NCP MP Supriya Sule called for a high-level investigation into these claims via social media.

In response to these allegations, the vigilance teams from the prison department visited the jail in central Maharashtra on Thursday to commence an independent investigation. Officials reported that statements from eight to ten individuals, including jail staff and other personnel, have been recorded. A detailed report is expected to be submitted to the Director General of Prisons within the next two days.

Santosh Deshmukh, the 45-year-old Panchayat head from Massajog village in Beed district, was kidnapped on December 9, 2024, tortured, and subsequently murdered. His death was reportedly linked to his opposition to extortion by a wind energy company.
