Investigation Launched After Wrong Blood Type Transfusion at Bikaner Hospital
Incident at PBM Hospital
A troubling incident has emerged from PBM Hospital in Bikaner, where a woman undergoing treatment reportedly received a transfusion of the incorrect blood type. Following this alarming event, hospital authorities have initiated an investigation.
According to sources within the hospital, a 75-year-old patient named Bhawani Devi was mistakenly administered blood from the wrong group while receiving treatment in the Acharya Tulsi Cancer Wing. She had been admitted due to severe anemia, and her blood transfusion was scheduled for Wednesday evening.
During the procedure, it is alleged that a unit of blood from a different group was given, leading to a sudden deterioration in her condition. Family members reported that Bhawani Devi's blood type is A positive, and while the first unit was transfused without any issues, the second unit received from the blood bank was of type B positive.
It is claimed that the medical staff failed to conduct proper checks before administering the blood. The error was discovered when a relative noticed the blood group written on the unit during the transfusion and promptly alerted the nursing staff and doctors.
The transfusion was halted immediately, and emergency treatment was initiated, stabilizing the patient's condition. Upon learning of the incident, Dr. Surendra Verma, the principal of the medical college, along with the head of the department, visited the cancer wing to assess the situation.
Dr. Verma confirmed that the patient is currently stable, although her hemoglobin levels were critically low, necessitating the blood transfusion. He acknowledged that complications arose during the process and stated that a committee will be formed to investigate the matter thoroughly. He assured that strict action would be taken against anyone found responsible.
