Police Inquiry Initiated Over Viral Video Incident

Shillong, January 13: Authorities have initiated a police investigation following the circulation of a video that depicts a traffic volunteer in Shillong allegedly coercing a visitor from Silchar, Assam, to pay a hefty sum of Rs 15,000 as a supposed fine for entering a restricted area.

Vivek Syiem, the Superintendent of Police for East Khasi Hills District, confirmed on Tuesday that an inquiry has been launched to examine the situation.

“The individual involved is a temporary worker. It is illegal to request or accept cash from traffic offenders. Disciplinary measures will be enforced based on the inquiry's outcomes,” he stated.

The investigation was prompted by the emergence of the video on social media, which allegedly shows the traffic volunteer threatening the visitor and insisting on payment.

This incident reportedly occurred when an old hatchback entered a no-entry zone in the Madanrting locality of the city.

The footage reveals that the home guard volunteer, affiliated with the Traffic Department, signaled the vehicle to halt. When the car failed to stop, the volunteer pursued it on a motorcycle and managed to intercept it.

In the video, the volunteer can be heard allegedly threatening the visitors and demanding cash, speaking in broken Hindi, “Lakh lakh ka fine hai, kitna de sakta? Agar amount hoga to hum bolega, hoga nahi to case pe daal dega,” suggesting that a significant fine would be levied unless immediate payment was made.

Initially, the volunteer demanded around Rs 1 lakh but reportedly reduced the amount to Rs 17,000 after discussions. He then escorted the driver to an ATM and ultimately released him after receiving Rs 15,000.

Law enforcement took action following the video's viral spread. However, the authenticity of the video has not been independently verified.
