Investigation Update on Zubeen Garg's Case

Guwahati, Dec 6: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) is nearing the conclusion of its inquiry into the death of renowned cultural figure Zubeen Garg, as stated by Munna Prasad Gupta, Special Director General of Police (CID), on Saturday. Gupta revealed that the investigation is 'almost complete,' having interviewed over 300 witnesses to date.

During a press briefing in Guwahati, Gupta mentioned, 'The specifics will be included in the charge sheet, which is set to be submitted to the court on December 12. We have examined 300 witnesses and made seven arrests so far.'

He refrained from providing additional details, indicating that more information will be available once the chargesheet is filed.

'Currently, only one chargesheet will be submitted under case 18/2025,' he noted.

Zubeen Garg tragically passed away on September 19 while swimming in Singapore, a loss that deeply affected his fans in Assam and the Northeast.

On Friday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed that the SIT has compiled an extensive 3,500 pages of documentation related to the investigation.

'The SIT has finalized its investigation, and nearly 3,500 pages of documents have been prepared. A meeting was conducted with the Advocate General to determine the next steps,' Sarma emphasized, highlighting the importance of timely submission of the chargesheet.

'We expect to receive the documents before December 18; otherwise, the accused currently in custody may qualify for bail,' he added.

Previously, on November 25, Sarma informed the Assembly that Garg's death was classified as a murder, asserting that the government had reached this conclusion shortly after the SIT probe commenced on September 23.

The individuals accused have been charged under BNS Sections 61, 105, and 106, with the government requesting the Gauhati High Court to include Section 103 (equivalent to former IPC 302).

'Initial investigations indicated that this was not a case of negligence but rather murder. If Section 103 is not included, the accused could potentially secure bail,' the Chief Minister stated, expressing confidence in the SIT's findings.
