Investigation Intensifies in Murder of US-Born Woman in Ireland
Details of the Case
Reports from Irish media indicate that the primary suspect in the murder of Jamey Carney, a woman originally from the United States, fled Ireland mere hours after the incident. The 28-year-old asylum seeker from the Middle East took a flight from Dublin to Istanbul, Turkey, on Tuesday morning, just before Carney's 13-year-old daughter discovered her mother's body at their rental in Killarney, County Kerry. This unexpected departure poses a significant challenge for investigators, who initially thought the suspect might still be in Ireland after leaving Killarney.
Carney, aged 43, had relocated to Ireland from Westchester County, New York, in 2021. She was found deceased on Tuesday afternoon, having suffered multiple head injuries. The Irish police, known as the Gardaí, have escalated the investigation to a murder inquiry. Although the authorities have not publicly named the suspect, they have confirmed he is a 28-year-old migrant who sought asylum upon arriving in Ireland in 2024.
According to sources, Carney had known the suspect for approximately 18 months, having met him at a pro-Palestine protest. Reports suggest that she had shared content from these demonstrations on her social media accounts. A police source mentioned, "The feeling is that she may have met this individual at an anti-war demonstration and kept in contact over the last number of months." Investigators believe the suspect traveled by bus from Killarney to Dublin around 3:30 AM on Tuesday before boarding his flight to Istanbul around 11 AM.
The alarm was raised around 1:20 PM when Carney's daughter reached out to a family friend due to concerns about her mother's well-being. This friend then contacted another individual, who alerted the Gardaí. Upon arrival, officers found Carney's body, which had been covered with a duvet, and noted that she had suffered severe head injuries, indicating a prolonged assault.
Reports indicate that the suspect had been residing in an International Protection Accommodation Service (IPAS) center in Killarney while awaiting asylum since mid-2024. He was reportedly familiar with Carney and often stayed at her residence. Investigators are worried that he might use Turkey as a transit point to return to his home country. Although Turkey has an extradition treaty with Ireland, extradition requires formal criminal charges, and authorities cannot seek extradition solely for questioning.
In a statement released on Wednesday, An Garda Síochána confirmed the upgrade of the investigation to a murder inquiry. A spokesperson stated, "An Garda Síochána are continuing to investigate all the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body of a female at a domestic residence in Killarney on Tuesday 7th July 2026." The results of the post-mortem examination have not been disclosed for operational reasons. A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to oversee the case, and an incident room has been set up at Killarney Garda Station.
The police have urged anyone who was in the Muckross Road area of Killarney between 11 PM on July 6 and 5 AM on July 7, especially those with CCTV or dashcam footage, to come forward. Carney was employed by a healthcare consulting firm and was actively involved in local sports, heritage organizations, and pro-Palestine advocacy in Ireland. Her family is expected to travel from the United States. Local councillor Martin Grady, a close friend of Carney, described her death as "an appalling tragedy," stating, "She was a loving, caring mother and was always happy and smiling."
