Renewed Scrutiny in Karur Stampede Investigation

The investigation into the Karur stampede incident is gaining momentum once again. Recent reports indicate that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned Vijay, the leader of the Tamilaga Vetrikazhagam and a prominent figure in Tamil cinema, to appear for questioning on January 19 for the second time.

It is noteworthy that Vijay was interrogated for approximately six hours at the CBI headquarters in Delhi on Monday. The agency requested him to return the following day, but Vijay sought a few days' extension citing the Pongal festival, leading to the rescheduling of the date. In this context, former ADG (Law and Order) of Tamil Nadu, S. Davidson Devasirvatham, was also questioned on Tuesday.

So far, the CBI has interrogated several officials from the TVK, Vijay's driver, and various police personnel regarding this case. The investigation was taken over by the CBI from the special investigation team of the Tamil Nadu police following directives from the Supreme Court.

This case pertains to the tragic stampede that occurred on September 27, 2025, resulting in the deaths of 41 individuals and injuring over 60 others. In light of this grave incident, the Supreme Court has established a three-member supervisory committee, chaired by former judge Ajay Rastogi.

During the hearings, the apex court remarked that the stampede has left a profound impact on the citizens of the nation and has far-reaching consequences. The court emphasized that safeguarding the fundamental rights of families who lost their loved ones is of utmost priority. Additionally, the court expressed strong discontent regarding public comments made by senior police officials about the case, warning that such statements could undermine the integrity of the investigation.

After hinting at a political career for several years, Vijay officially announced his party, TVK, in February 2024. The party's first significant electoral challenge will be the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections, expected to take place in April.
