SIT Probes Ram Mandir Trust's Financial Activities

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has broadened its inquiry into the Ram Mandir Trust, focusing on expenditures exceeding ₹124 crores related to significant events. These events include the Pran Pratishtha ceremony scheduled for January 2024, preparations for the Mahakumbh in 2025, and the flag hoisting ceremony that took place in November 2025.

According to sources, the SIT is conducting a comprehensive audit of these expenses and has yet to reach any conclusions regarding financial irregularities. The primary aim of this investigation is to verify adherence to the Trust's financial procedures and approval methods.

Context of the Investigation

This extensive investigation comes at a time when the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust is embroiled in a controversy over alleged donation misappropriation. The Uttar Pradesh government established an SIT to investigate claims of mismanagement of donations from devotees, leading to the arrest of several suspects. The scope of the investigation has since expanded beyond the alleged theft to include a review of the Trust's financial systems, expenditure records, and approval processes.

As a result of this controversy, significant changes have already occurred within the Trust. On Monday, the Trust accepted the resignations of General Secretary Champat Rai and Trustee Anil Mishra, who stepped down amid the donation theft allegations. Trustee Krishna Mohan has been appointed as the interim General Secretary, and the Trust has announced a comprehensive administrative review to strengthen oversight and restore public confidence.

Details of the Expenditures Under Scrutiny

The largest expenditure under investigation pertains to the Pran Pratishtha ceremony for Ram Lalla, which took place on January 22, 2024, costing the Trust approximately ₹113 crores. This event attracted around 8,000 guests and was one of the most significant religious gatherings in recent years, featuring the consecration of the idol in the newly constructed temple.

According to the audit records being examined by the SIT, major expenditure categories include ₹35.97 crores for shade and tent city infrastructure, ₹30.85 crores for the Akshat Poojan campaign, ₹21.77 crores for promotions and advertisements, and ₹14.62 crores for decorations and lighting. Additional costs included ₹5.11 crores for food arrangements, ₹1.06 crores for religious rituals, ₹93 lakhs for devotional music, ₹68 lakhs for sound systems, and ₹43 lakhs each for electrical and mandal poojan preparations.

Future Events Under Investigation

The SIT is also reviewing expenses related to the first 'Pratishtha Dwadashi' ceremony held from January 11 to 13, 2025, which reportedly cost around ₹83 lakhs, including ₹52 lakhs for lighting and decorations. Investigators are also assessing the ₹43 lakhs spent on arrangements for devotees during the Mahakumbh, one of the largest religious events globally, which saw a significant influx of pilgrims to Ayodhya.
