Investigation Continues into Zubeen Garg's Death in Singapore
Ongoing Investigation into Zubeen Garg's Death
Guwahati, Dec 19: The inquiry into the passing of singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore is still underway, with local authorities confirming on Thursday that no evidence of foul play has been found thus far.
The Singapore Police Force (SPF) released a statement indicating that the investigation is ongoing, adhering to the Singapore Coroners Act of 2010.
According to the SPF, "Based on our current investigations, we do not suspect foul play in Garg's death," and they noted that the findings will be presented to the State Coroner once the investigation concludes.
A Coroner’s Inquiry (CI) is set to take place in January and February 2026 to ascertain the cause and circumstances surrounding the death.
The police have also requested the public to avoid speculation and refrain from sharing unverified information, assuring that a comprehensive and professional investigation is in progress.
In Assam, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing Garg’s death has lodged a complaint with the Assam Police Crime Branch against Akhil Gogoi, alleging that he circulated "unverified" documents that were claimed to be part of the case charge sheet.
A senior official mentioned that distributing such documents is unlawful and could mislead the public, causing confusion.
The nine-member SIT, led by Special Director General of Police Munna Prasad Gupta, submitted the charge sheet to the Kamrup (Metro) Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court on December 12.
Legal experts noted that certified copies of the charge sheet have not yet been made available to the public and have only been shared with the accused and their families.
"SIT Investigating Officer Rosie Kalita has filed a complaint requesting the registration of an FIR against Gogoi. The situation is currently under review, and a decision will be made accordingly," the official stated.
In response to these developments, Gogoi posted on social media, expressing that he was aware of the case being filed against him for publicizing the charge sheet. "I am quite ill, but I will travel to Guwahati to address the case," he mentioned.
Previously, the SIT had charged Garg’s secretary Siddhartha Sharma, festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, and band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta with murder.
Additionally, Garg’s cousin and a suspended Assam Police officer, Sandipan Garg, faces charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The singer’s two personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, have been accused of criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust related to alleged financial misappropriation.
Further charges include criminal conspiracy, extortion, cheating, and destruction of evidence against Mahanta, as well as criminal conspiracy and breach of trust against Sharma, breach of trust against Goswami, and destruction of evidence against Amritprava Mahanta.
