International Pro Boxing Championship Celebrates Legacy of Virbhadra Singh

The International Pro Boxing Championship held in Himachal Pradesh honored the legacy of former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh. Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu highlighted the importance of sports in fostering discipline and self-confidence among youth. The event featured international boxers and was attended by various dignitaries. Additionally, the Chief Minister flagged off the Olympic Run, emphasizing the government's commitment to promoting sports and developing infrastructure for athletes. With a Centre of Excellence being established, the state aims to inspire young sports enthusiasts while advocating for a drug-free society.
 

International Pro Boxing Championship Honors Virbhadra Singh

During the closing ceremony of the International Pro Boxing Championship held at the historic The Ridge on Tuesday evening, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu emphasized that the event was dedicated to the memory of the late Virbhadra Singh, a prominent leader of the Congress Party. He acknowledged Singh's significant contributions to the development of Himachal Pradesh.


Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu paid homage to the former Chief Minister, stating that such events inspire young athletes to excel in sports. He highlighted that sports cultivate discipline, enhance self-confidence, and encourage a healthy competitive spirit among participants. Furthermore, he noted that international competitions offer athletes a valuable chance to gain exposure and improve their skills.


The championship featured international boxers from countries including Sri Lanka, India, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Thailand. The event was attended by various dignitaries, including Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh, former MP Pratibha Singh, MLAs Harish Janartha and Hardeep Bawa, Vice Chairman of HIMUDA Yashwant Chhajta, Mayor of Shimla Surender Chauhan, Deputy Mayor Uma Kaushal, and others.


State Government's Commitment to Sports Development

Earlier on the same day, the Chief Minister inaugurated the Olympic Run from his official residence, Oak Over, in celebration of International Olympic Day. The run concluded at the Indira Gandhi State Sports Complex in Shimla, with around 200 athletes participating in both men's and women's categories.


In his address on International Olympic Day, the Chief Minister reiterated the State Government's dedication to promoting sports throughout Himachal Pradesh. He remarked, "Sports are a form of education. Just as students excel academically, athletes should aim to bring pride to the State through their sporting achievements." He also mentioned ongoing efforts to host 'Khelo India' events in the region.


Enhancing Sports Infrastructure and Youth Engagement

The Chief Minister further stated that substantial sports infrastructure has been established in the districts of Bilaspur, Kangra, Una, and Hamirpur for the benefit of the youth. He announced the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for sports in Nadaun, Hamirpur district, with an investment of Rs 150 crore, expected to be completed by October this year.


He emphasized that sports instill discipline and teamwork among the youth, qualities essential for achieving success in life. Additionally, he urged young people to actively participate in the State Government's anti-drug campaign, contributing to the creation of a drug-free and healthy society.
