Growing Tensions Within Punjab Congress

The Punjab Congress is currently facing escalating internal conflicts. Former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and his supporters are insisting on the removal of party president Amarinder Raja Warring. Bhupesh Baghel, the Congress in-charge for state affairs, is set to hold a high-level meeting with senior leaders for the second consecutive day on Tuesday. Notably, Channi, the MP from Jalandhar, was absent from a crucial meeting called by Baghel, indicating a widening rift within the state unit. Sukjinder Singh Randhawa also did not attend the meeting.

Feedback Sessions and Leadership Dynamics

On Monday, Baghel conducted separate meetings with key figures including the chairperson of the election committee Amar Singh, Leader of the Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa, and state Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring to gather feedback. Channi and his allies chose to stay away from these discussions, revealing underlying discontent among senior leaders. Warring downplayed their absence, stating that both leaders had informed the PPCC meeting chairperson of their unavailability due to being out of town.

Preparations for Upcoming Elections

This situation arises as the party gears up for the 2027 assembly elections. Congress has retained Warring as the head of the Punjab state unit and Bajwa as the Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly. Warring mentioned that Channi had communicated his absence to the meeting chairperson and expressed intentions to meet upon his return. Baghel confirmed that Channi was out of town for two days and would connect later.

Meeting Attendance and Leadership Clarifications

When questioned about the absence of certain members due to dissatisfaction, Warring clarified that all invited attendees were present, with two leaders having previously informed that they could not attend. He emphasized that only a limited number of individuals were invited, specifically the committee chairpersons. The other two leaders, Randhawa and Channi, had indicated they would meet in a day or two.
