Internal Strife Erupts in Opposition Alliance Over Rahul Gandhi's Remarks
Opposition Alliance Faces Internal Crisis
The opposition coalition is once again engulfed in a crisis of internal discord. This time, the rift between the Congress party and leftist factions has become glaringly evident. The controversy stems from a statement made by Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. During an event last week, he explicitly refused to embrace Pinarayi Vijayan, the former Chief Minister of Kerala and a prominent leader of the CPM, leading to sharp criticism from allied parties.
Refusal to Embrace
An audio recording from the June 8 meeting of the Indi alliance has surfaced, where Rahul Gandhi can be heard stating, "We have our own battles. But if you are asking me to embrace the former Chief Minister of Kerala, I cannot and will not do so, as I am engaged in a political struggle against him."
Political Rivalry in Kerala
It is important to note that the CPM and Congress are fierce rivals in Kerala, where Congress has recently ousted Vijayan from power. However, both parties are part of the same coalition at the national level.
Vijayan's Response
In response to Rahul Gandhi's remarks, Pinarayi Vijayan stated that there is no tradition of embracing between them, and their interactions are typically limited to formal handshakes. He criticized Gandhi, saying, "I have no objection to not embracing. My concern lies with the political message hidden behind that comment. It reflects Rahul Gandhi's perspective and his thoughts about the Indi alliance."
Left Leaders Criticize Rahul Gandhi
Following this controversy, leftist parties have intensified pressure on Congress. Senior CPM leader MA Baby remarked that no one asked Rahul Gandhi to embrace Vijayan, but he should cease demands for Vijayan's arrest. Meanwhile, Brinda Karat firmly stated, "Communists do not need to embrace anyone. We demand clean politics. Rahul Gandhi, keep your embraces to yourself, but learn to respect senior leaders like Pinarayi Vijayan as the leader of the opposition."
BJP's Critique
The BJP has also launched a sharp attack on this internal conflict within the opposition. They labeled the opposition coalition as a 'convenience alliance.' BJP spokesperson Shahzad Poonawala stated, "This coalition is rife with discord, lacking any mission. It exists only on paper, not on the ground. These parties may come together for photo opportunities, but their hearts will never unite."
