Intensifying Political Campaigns in Assam Ahead of Assembly Elections

As the Assembly elections in Assam draw near, both the BJP and Congress are intensifying their campaigns with large rallies across the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his surprise at the public turnout during the BJP's 'Jana Aashirwad Yatra', while Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi is actively campaigning under the 'Somoy Poriborton Yatra'. The political landscape is heating up with discussions of alliances and public sentiment regarding unfulfilled promises, setting the stage for a competitive electoral battle.

Political Rallying Gears Up in Assam

Guwahati/Jorhat, March 1: As the Assembly elections approach, both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) have ramped up their campaign efforts, organizing large rallies throughout the state on Sunday to strengthen their support base.

The BJP continued its 'Jana Aashirwad Yatra' for a second day, starting from Jagiroad and passing through Morigaon, Raha, and Nagaon. In contrast, the Congress party advanced with its 'Somoy Poriborton Yatra', framing it as a movement for political transformation.

During the yatra, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his astonishment at the enthusiastic turnout from the public.

“For someone my age, standing for 14 hours straight is quite a challenge. Last night, I even questioned if it was feasible. However, the love and support from the people make one forget their fatigue,” Sarma remarked.

Commenting on the crowd in Jagiroad, he stated, “Such scenes are unprecedented in Assam. I believe the electorate has already made their decision. I am pleased that our efforts over the past five years are being recognized, and I anticipate a strong mandate this time.”

When asked about the presence of bulldozers during the yatra in Jagiroad, Sarma mentioned receiving mixed feedback from the public, covering topics from employment and land rights to commendations for actions against illegal encroachments.

“This serves as a message that this time 1.5 bighas of land were cleared; next time, we aim to clear 5 lakh bighas. No illegal infiltrators from Bangladesh will find peace in Assam,” he asserted.

At the time of this report, the BJP's 'Jana Aashirwad Yatra' had reached Raha.

On the other hand, APCC president Gaurav Gogoi, along with senior leaders, entered Tingkhong in Dibrugarh district as part of their 'Somoy Poriborton Yatra'.

Gogoi later prayed at Raidongia Bor Namghar, seeking blessings from the local populace.

Regarding potential alliances with the Raijor Dal, Gogoi stated, “We have already proposed an alliance to the Raijor Dal and are currently awaiting their response.”

However, reports suggesting that the Congress might relinquish certain stronghold constituencies to their allies have caused unrest among party members.

Workers from Khuwang and Sissiborgaon confronted Gogoi in Dibrugarh, voicing their concerns that their constituencies could be handed over to allies. They firmly stated their opposition to any such decisions.

Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia defended the Congress campaign while criticizing the ruling party's governance.

“The public is yearning for change as they have been misled with unfulfilled promises — such as ST status for six communities, increased wages for tea workers, and a super express highway over the Brahmaputra,” Saikia remarked.

As both political parties escalate their campaigns, the rallies on Sunday highlighted an intensifying electoral battle, with development claims, alliance strategies, and emotional issues shaping the narrative leading up to the Assembly elections.
