Political Buzz in Maharashtra

As the political climate heats up in Maharashtra, preparations for the municipal elections are gaining momentum. On Sunday, Devendra Fadnavis conducted a roadshow in the Bhosari area of Pimpri-Chinchwad. Prior to this, the BJP-led Mahayuti coalition unveiled its manifesto for the upcoming BMC elections in Mumbai.

Key Promises in the Manifesto

The manifesto, released for the BMC elections scheduled on January 15, outlines several significant commitments. The Chief Minister announced plans to utilize artificial intelligence technology for identifying and deporting illegal Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas. He stated that this AI tool would be ready within six months to help identify illegal immigrants for removal from the country.

Focus on Illegal Immigration

Fadnavis emphasized the goal of making Mumbai free from illegal immigration, noting that Maharashtra has identified the highest number of illegal immigrants so far. However, the Congress party has raised questions regarding this claim. Party spokesperson Sachin Sawant urged the government to release comprehensive data supporting its assertions.

Public Transport Initiatives

The manifesto also includes major announcements regarding public transportation. The Mahayuti coalition has pledged to increase the number of BEST buses from approximately 5,000 to 10,000, gradually introduce electric buses, and offer a 50% fare discount for female passengers.

Voting Day Preparations

In anticipation of the voting on January 15, the government has declared a public holiday for that day. According to the election commission, voting will take place simultaneously across 29 municipal corporations, with around 1,700 candidates contesting for 227 wards in the BMC. Polling will be conducted from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM, with results expected to be announced on January 16.

Political Activities Beyond Mumbai

Political activities are not confined to Mumbai alone. Notably, cousins Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, who have reunited after nearly two decades, held a joint rally in Nashik and have another rally planned for Monday.

Tensions Within the Coalition

Meanwhile, signs of tension have emerged within the coalition regarding recent statements. In response to Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's comments, Fadnavis remarked that coalition partners should refrain from making public statements against each other. He assured that he would maintain restraint and respond at the appropriate time.

A Busy Sunday in Maharashtra Politics

Overall, this last Sunday before the elections is marked by heightened activity in Maharashtra's political landscape, with all major parties strategizing, holding rallies, and engaging in accusations to win over voters.
