Intensified Political Preparations Ahead of BTC Elections

With the Bodoland Territorial Council elections just weeks away, political parties in Kokrajhar are intensifying their preparations. The ruling United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) has announced its second list of candidates, featuring a mix of seasoned leaders and newcomers. Other major parties, including Congress and the Bodoland People’s Front, are also revealing their candidates, indicating a competitive electoral landscape. As various parties field candidates across constituencies, the upcoming elections promise to be a high-stakes contest with multiple contenders vying for control.
 

Political Landscape in Kokrajhar

Kokrajhar, August 31: As the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections approach in just 22 days, political factions in the area are ramping up their efforts, revealing new candidate lists as they gear up for a crucial electoral battle.

The ruling United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) has announced its second list of 16 candidates, which received approval from the Central Working Committee and was disclosed by party president Pramod Boro.

Notable candidates include Boro from Goibari, Ranjit Basumatary (Nichima), Ukhil Mushahary (Kachugaon), Khampa Borgoyari (Chirang Duar), and Mariam Toppo (Nonai Serfang).

This list showcases a blend of experienced politicians and newcomers, such as Prosen Brahma, Mursida Begum, Ranju Ahmed, and Gobinda Chandra Basumatary, indicating a strategy to combine seasoned leadership with fresh perspectives.

Previously, the UPPL had released its first list of 18 candidates on August 22, which led to mixed reactions, including celebrations and protests in various areas. Boro, who was not included in the initial list, assured his supporters that the party's core committee was following a well-defined strategy.

On Saturday, other significant parties, including Congress, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), and the Alternative Party of Boroland (APB), also announced their candidates.

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) revealed a substantial list of 37 candidates, indicating its ambition to strengthen its foothold in BTR politics.

Key figures from this list include Ranchana Basumatary (Jamduar), Rananajay Narzary (Soraibil), Kwrrwm Mushahary (Kachugaon), Sahar Ali (Fakiragram), Dwimu Roje (Dotma), and Matilal Basumatary (Banargaon).

The BPF, under the leadership of Hagrama Mohilary, has put forth its second list of 10 candidates, which includes Jangila Hazowary (Manas Serfang), Khalilur Rahman (Thuribari), Diganta Goyari (Salbari), Swmkhwr Boro (Koklabari), and Jiten Muchahary (Goibari). This follows their first list of 22 candidates released on August 5.

The relatively new Alternative Party of Boroland (APB) has also introduced eight candidates in its second phase, featuring names like Md Delwar Hossain (Guma), Harkuliash Basumatary (Jamduar), Nara Basumatary (Soraibil), and Manoj Mushahary (Banargaon).

This party aims to position itself as a formidable competitor against established political entities.

With the UPPL, Congress, BPF, APB, BJP, and other regional parties now fielding candidates across various constituencies, the BTC elections are poised to be a highly competitive and multi-faceted contest.
