Intensified Political Campaigns in Assam Ahead of Assembly Elections

With the Assam Assembly elections on the horizon, political campaigns in Guwahati are heating up. The ruling BJP and the opposition Congress are both launching significant outreach programs to rally grassroots support. The BJP's 'Booth Bijoy Abhiyan' and Congress's 'Samay Paribartan' rally are key initiatives aimed at engaging voters. Allegations of land grabbing and educational disparities are central themes in the Congress campaign, while the BJP focuses on its achievements. As both parties intensify their efforts, the political landscape in Assam is becoming increasingly competitive.

Political Mobilization in Guwahati

Guwahati, Feb 5: As the Assam Assembly elections draw near, political activities in Guwahati have escalated significantly. Both the ruling BJP and the main opposition party, Congress, have initiated parallel outreach efforts to galvanize support from the grassroots level.

The BJP commenced its 'Booth Bijoy Abhiyan' at booth number 32 in Jalukbari, while Congress launched its 'Samay Paribartan – Maati Bochaok, Jaati Bochaok' rally from Manabendra Bhawan in Ganeshguri.

Senior leaders led the Congress rally, where supporters marched through prominent city areas, holding placards with slogans like 'Dekh’ot koi Mami dangor nohoi' (Mami is not bigger than the country).

The rally is set to traverse through Maa Kamakhya Mandir, Amingaon, and Ganeshguri, eventually reaching Hotel Lily and Zubeen Khetra in Sonapur.

During the rally in Amingaon, Gaurav Gogoi, president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of arbitrary actions and alleged extensive land grabbing by his family.

“This rally aims to expose how the Chief Minister is acting without regard for the law, with his family reportedly seizing around 12,000 bighas of land across Assam,” Gogoi claimed.

He criticized the establishment of a private educational institution, labeling it as elitist due to its exorbitant fees, and questioned the government's priorities.

“It is disgraceful that under a former Education Minister, nearly 8,000 schools were shut down, while his family has opened a 60-bigha elite school. We intend to reveal these truths to the people of Assam,” he asserted.

Debabrata Saikia, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, also criticized the government regarding the state of educational infrastructure.

“With government school facilities at an all-time low, promoting elite schools with high fees will adversely affect the common populace,” Saikia remarked.

He further alleged that despite assurances to protect jaati, maati, bheti, there is a push towards increasing CBSE-affiliated schools.

On the other hand, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma officially launched the BJP's Booth Bijoy Abhiyan in Jalukbari, announcing that the campaign would be implemented across all Assembly constituencies in the state.

“As part of this initiative, BJP workers will distribute stickers, party flags, and a booklet detailing 50 government achievements. If a family declines, our workers will respect their wishes and seek permission first,” Sarma stated.

With both major parties ramping up their mobilization strategies, the political landscape in Assam is clearly defined as the election campaign enters a critical phase.
