Intensified Israeli Strikes in Lebanon Amid Ongoing Conflict
Escalation of Violence in Lebanon
Israel has launched its most intense attacks on Lebanon since the conflict with Hezbollah began last month, resulting in over 250 fatalities on Wednesday alone. This escalation occurred despite a two-week ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, during which Hezbollah had paused its assaults. The recent violence raises significant concerns regarding regional peace efforts. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that the ceasefire in Lebanon was a crucial condition of the agreement between Iran and the U.S. The capital, Beirut, experienced at least five consecutive explosions, sending plumes of smoke into the sky. The Israeli military reported that it executed its largest and most coordinated assault to date, targeting over 100 Hezbollah command centers and military installations in Beirut, the Bekaa Valley, and southern Lebanon within a span of ten minutes.
Casualties and Humanitarian Crisis
According to the country's civil defense service, a total of 254 individuals have died across Lebanon, with more than 1,100 injured. The highest number of casualties occurred in Beirut, where 91 people lost their lives. The health ministry confirmed the deaths of 182 individuals nationwide, indicating that this figure may not be final. This day marked the deadliest of the ongoing conflict, which began on March 2, following attacks on Iran by the U.S. and Israel, prompting Hezbollah to retaliate against Israel in support of Tehran. In response, Israel launched a vigorous military campaign on both land and air fronts. Journalists observed civil defense workers using cranes to rescue an elderly woman trapped in a building that had partially collapsed due to the Israeli strikes.
Emergency Response and International Reactions
Earlier, reporters noted that individuals were transporting the injured to hospitals on motorcycles due to a lack of available ambulances. One of Beirut's largest medical centers reported a critical need for blood of all types. The UN human rights chief, Volker Turk, condemned the scale of killings and destruction in Lebanon, describing it as horrifying. He expressed disbelief that such a massacre could occur just hours after an agreement for a ceasefire with Iran was reached. An attack also took place in the southern suburbs of Beirut. In a televised address on Wednesday evening, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted that Lebanon is not part of the ceasefire agreement with Iran, and the Israeli military continues its operations against Hezbollah with full force. White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt and Vice President J.D. Vance also stated on Wednesday that Lebanon is not included in this ceasefire.
