Intensified Campaigning in Bodoland Territorial Region Ahead of Elections
Campaigning Heats Up in BTR
Kokrajhar, Mar 28: As polling day approaches, the political landscape in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) is witnessing a surge in campaigning efforts. The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) is actively pursuing its agenda following its recent decision to part ways with the NDA, opting for a solo campaign in crucial constituencies.
The party has ramped up its outreach initiatives, conducting a series of rallies across five constituencies in Kokrajhar district, including Gossaigaon, Parbatjhora, Dotma, Baukhungri, and Kokrajhar, aiming to solidify its support base ahead of the elections.
During a rally in Dotma on Friday, Cabinet Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma defended the UPPL's choice to sever ties with the NDA, claiming that this decision has fortified the party's standing.
“Currently, UPPL has no alliances with Congress or BJP. We initially joined the NDA to promote peace, but they have since abandoned that mission. This change is not a setback for us; instead, it places us in a stronger position. The real loss will be for the NDA,” Brahma stated.
He further noted that in the last BTC elections, the UPPL's alliance with the NDA had alienated some anti-BJP voters, which allowed the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) to gain more seats.
“This time, the electorate is firmly supporting the UPPL,” he asserted.
Brahma expressed confidence in the party's stronghold across various constituencies, including Dotma, Kokrajhar, Parbatjhora, Baukhungri, Gossaigaon, Udalguri, and Tamulpur.
He also took a jab at NDA candidate Biswajit Daimary, questioning his decision to shift constituencies.
“If he is genuinely strong, why did he abandon his own constituency? If he had performed well as Speaker and MLA, why is he contesting from Tamulpur again?” Brahma queried.
UPPL president and former BTC chief Pramod Boro led a significant rally from South Dotma to the memorial of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma, rallying support for party candidate Raju Kumar Narzary.
“Individuals from all communities are uniting behind the UPPL. Voters in Dotma are seeking change,” Boro remarked, expressing optimism that Narzary would secure victory by a “large margin.”
He emphasized that the party is contesting based on its “own strength” and anticipates a robust performance throughout the BTR.
BPF Responds with New Inductions
In response, the BPF is also showcasing its momentum, with several leaders and members, including the general secretary of the Alternative Party of Boroland, joining the party at its Kokrajhar office on Friday.
Senior BPF leader Khampa Borgoyary welcomed the new members, stating that more leaders would join in the upcoming days and confidently asserted that the NDA would win in at least 15 BTC constituencies.
With the UPPL contesting independently following its split from the NDA, the upcoming elections in the BTR have gained heightened importance, setting the stage for a direct competition between the UPPL and the NDA-supported BPF.
