Political Campaigns Heat Up in Assam

Jorhat, March 28: As the Assam Assembly elections approach, political campaigning has ramped up significantly across the state, with leaders from both the ruling party and the opposition increasing their outreach efforts despite challenging weather conditions.

During a rally at Borhola Kalakunj Bhawan, Gaurav Gogoi, the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) and MP from Jorhat, expressed support for Congress candidate Pran Kurmi in the Titabor constituency. He invoked the legacy of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, emphasizing that the party has nominated a candidate who has earned his trust.

In a pointed political critique, Gogoi accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of having 'betrayed' Tarun Gogoi and called for his removal from politics.

“The people of Titabor, like those across Assam, desire to see Himanta Biswa Sarma defeated. He should bid farewell to Assam’s political landscape,” Gogoi stated.

He urged the electorate to support the Congress symbol, asserting, “If Titabor votes for Congress, we can achieve that. Otherwise, it would mean endorsing Himanta Biswa Sarma.”

Gogoi noted that several leaders from the BJP and AGP have joined Congress in the lead-up to the elections, expressing confidence in a robust performance.

“Our party is ready to secure victories from all fronts,” he declared.

He criticized the BJP-led government's development record in Jorhat, claiming that local leadership has been overlooked.

“In the past five years, BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami has not been given the recognition he deserves. Decisions have been made through 'remote control' without his input,” he remarked.

Gogoi asserted that future development should align with the aspirations of the populace.

“The individual in Dispur cannot dictate Jorhat’s advancement. Our vision is to elevate Jorhat on a global platform in terms of heritage, culture, and tourism,” he added.

In response to the BJP's criticisms of previous Congress administrations, Gogoi questioned the ruling party's accountability.

“Which party has been in power for the last decade? To deflect from their failures, they blame others instead of owning up to their responsibilities,” he stated.

He also raised concerns regarding law and order, alleging selective enforcement by the administration.

Gogoi commented on the ongoing political dispute involving Badruddin Ajmal and the Chief Minister, which arose from a recent exchange of remarks. Ajmal allegedly stated, “If we ever get him (CM), I will break his spinal cord,” in response to Sarma’s earlier comments about breaking the bones of illegal immigrants.

Criticizing both parties, Gogoi remarked, “We condemn Ajmal’s comments as well as the Chief Minister's silence. Why is he quiet now?”

He further pointed out inconsistencies in governance and political stances.

“People are looking for genuine leadership. The administration should operate independently, free from political influence,” he concluded.
