Major Air Assault on Kyiv

In a significant overnight offensive, Russia launched a series of airstrikes on Kyiv early Monday, resulting in injuries to at least 13 individuals and causing severe damage to vital infrastructure. Among the affected sites was the historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which suffered considerable destruction due to what officials described as a direct hit. Tymur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv's military administration, reported extensive damage throughout the capital, condemning the attack as a 'brutal assault on our people and our heritage.' Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko shared images on X, depicting parts of the monastery engulfed in flames.

Authorities in Kyiv reported that the city faced a large-scale missile and drone assault overnight. A residential high-rise caught fire, and debris from intercepted drones ignited blazes in homes and vehicles across the area. Mayor Vitali Klitschko noted that the strikes damaged electricity infrastructure, leaving approximately 140,000 residents without power.

During the assault, the Ukrainian Air Force reported that drones were approaching Kyiv from various directions. Witnesses in the city heard multiple explosions, and air raid alerts were issued across much of Ukraine as Russian strikes targeted several regions. In Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, a second Russian strike resulted in the deaths of five emergency service workers and injuries to at least five others, according to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.

Local authorities also reported attacks in the Dnipro region. In response to the escalating situation, neighboring Poland, a NATO and EU member, heightened its air defense readiness. The Polish armed forces announced that fighter jets were deployed, and ground-based air defense systems were put on alert.

This latest wave of attacks coincides with ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict ahead of the upcoming G7 summit in France. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned on Sunday that he had discussed peace efforts with US President Donald Trump, who also spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing the importance of ending the war and offering US assistance in achieving a resolution.
