Political Dynamics in Jorhat

Jorhat, March 31:  A highly competitive political battle is unfolding in Assam's No. 100 Jorhat constituency, where BJP's Hitendra Nath Goswami is set to challenge Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi. This contest is being closely monitored as one of the key highlights of the upcoming elections.

To bolster support for Goswami, Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visited Jorhat on Tuesday. His trip commenced with prayers at the Marwari Thakurbari temple, followed by a speech to a large audience at the AT Road truck stand.

Fadnavis opened his address in Assamese, resonating with the audience by referencing Assam's rich historical legacy.

“Just as Maharashtra draws strength from Chhatrapati Shivaji, Assam's pride is rooted in Lachit Borphukan's legacy. Without his bravery, Assam's narrative would have been vastly different,” he remarked, earning applause from attendees.

He emphasized the BJP's commitment to the Northeast, asserting that the region is pivotal to India's developmental journey.

“Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Northeast has transitioned from being sidelined to becoming a focal point of India's growth,” he stated.

Fadnavis criticized the Congress party, accusing it of neglecting Assam and the Northeast region.

“Despite having numerous Prime Ministers, Assam seldom experienced their presence. In contrast, Prime Minister Modi has made multiple visits, demonstrating genuine commitment through actions,” he added.

He further claimed that the Congress party engages in self-serving politics rather than focusing on development.

“The Congress does not prioritize developmental politics; it is motivated by personal interests. For years, Assam was overlooked, but the BJP has ensured both progress and the preservation of the state's identity,” Fadnavis asserted.

In light of global instability, he referenced the ongoing crisis in West Asia, stating, “While neighboring regions face fuel shortages due to conflict, India under Modi has maintained a steady supply of petrol, diesel, and domestic LPG. Misinformation is being spread, but the truth is evident to the public.”

He also pointed out significant infrastructure and economic initiatives, particularly the Tata Group's semiconductor project in Jagiroad.

“This project is not merely industrial; it represents a transformative leap. Approximately 30,000 young people will gain employment, positioning Assam on the global semiconductor map,” he explained.

Fadnavis credited the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government for propelling Assam's economic advancement.

“The current pace of development is unprecedented. From infrastructure to industry, Assam is progressing swiftly,” he remarked.

Addressing the Opposition, Fadnavis questioned Gaurav Gogoi's commitment to the constituency.

“Since his election, he has visited Jorhat only a few times. True leadership requires consistent dedication, not sporadic appearances,” he stated.

In a pointed comment, he added, “Those serving in the Lok Sabha should prioritize their responsibilities there. After the elections, their presence here will be limited.”

The Chief Minister also discussed crucial electoral topics, including land rights for tea tribes, illegal immigration, and safeguarding Assam's cultural heritage.

He reiterated the BJP's position that illegal immigration, which he claimed was rampant during previous Congress administrations, has been effectively managed.

“There was a time when Assam faced demographic threats. That situation has been reversed. Peace has returned, and militant groups are reintegrating into society,” he concluded.

The rally was attended by Union Minister of State Pabitra Margherita and several senior BJP officials.
