Intense Political Showdown Expected in Upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament
Political Turmoil Anticipated in Parliament's Monsoon Session
The Monsoon session of Parliament is set to commence from July 20 and is expected to run until August 13, with significant political confrontations anticipated. Sources indicate that there could be up to 19 meetings during this four-week session. The session is likely to be tumultuous due to ongoing political shifts within various regional parties and an aggressive opposition poised to challenge the government.
Before the session kicks off, the Lok Sabha Speaker may make decisions regarding the merger of 20 rebel MPs from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and six MPs from the Shiv Sena (UBT) into the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction). There is also a possibility of determining the seating arrangements for these rebel MPs in the Lok Sabha.
Key Legislative Proposals on the Agenda
The NDA government, nearing a two-thirds majority, is preparing to push through several crucial laws during this session, including two constitutional amendment bills. Among these, the proposed 131st constitutional amendment bill may be reintroduced with modifications, potentially increasing the number of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies by up to 50%.
The 130th constitutional amendment bill could propose that if the Prime Minister, Chief Minister, or ministers are imprisoned for more than 30 days, they must resign from their positions. It is expected that a joint parliamentary committee will recommend safeguards to prevent misuse of this provision.
Additional Legislative Measures and Opposition Challenges
The government may also seek to extend the timeline for the committee formed to discuss the 'One Nation, One Election' bill. Controversial laws related to the FCRA might also be introduced in the upcoming session. Furthermore, bills concerning the establishment of a developed India education institution, anti-doping reforms, increasing the number of Supreme Court judges, corporate law reforms, and a securities market code are likely to be presented for approval.
The opposition is gearing up to confront the government on various issues, including the monsoon, droughts, floods, the NEET paper leak, alleged misappropriation of donations for the Ram Mandir, rising fuel prices, inflation, and unemployment.
