Opposition Demands Accountability from Home Minister

On Thursday, a heated exchange took place in the Rajya Sabha between the opposition and the ruling party. The opposition has been persistently calling for a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the police actions during student protests last month. As the session resumed, opposition members raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Shah, insisting that the Home Minister address their concerns in the house. Amidst the uproar, Mallikarjun Kharge urged Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan to direct the Home Minister to come to the Rajya Sabha and provide a statement.

Minister Rijiju Responds to Opposition's Demands

Rijiju objected to this demand, stating that the opposition leaders have been raising the same issue for the past week and that the rules do not permit such directives. He emphasized that one cannot instruct the Chair and added that opposition leaders cannot impose their conditions on the house. Rijiju also accused Kharge of misusing his position as the leader of the opposition, asserting that the opposition cannot repeatedly raise the same issue in the manner they have been.

The minister also took aim at Congress leader Pawan Khera, alleging that the party leadership was not allowing him to deliver his first speech, which led him to shout slogans in the well of the house. During this intense debate, the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha informed Rijiju that he could convey the opposition's concerns to the Home Minister. The opposition is demanding a statement from Amit Shah regarding police actions against students, a discussion on alleged 'misappropriation' of funds for the Ram Temple, and a call for restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

Opposition Marches in Parliament

Earlier on Wednesday, opposition leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi led a march from the statue of Gandhi at 'Inspiration Site' to 'Makar Dwar', representing the INDIA alliance parties. They carried placards and shouted slogans such as 'Chanda Chor, Gaddi Chor', 'Amit Shah, respond', and 'Where will we find the Chanda Chor? At the BJP office'.
