Guwahati, Aug 16: The Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election is gearing up to be a fiercely contested event, with the BJP recognizing the challenges ahead, while the Congress is poised to reveal its strategy pending the Election Commission's announcement.

Dilip Saikia, the president of Assam BJP, acknowledged the difficulties of the upcoming bypoll but expressed confidence in the party's ability to secure a win. He stated, “The Nagaon by-election presents a tough challenge for us, but we are committed to winning.”

When asked about the candidates from rival parties, Saikia noted that each party has the autonomy to choose its nominees, but emphasized that the BJP is determined to put forth a strong effort to claim the seat.

Highlighting the achievements of the BJP-led governments at both the state and national levels, Saikia asserted that the party's focus on development and evolving voter sentiments would work in their favor.

“Our government has been dedicated to serving the people and fostering development. With the BJP in power in Assam and at the Centre, we are confident that voters will support our candidate,” he remarked.

On the other hand, Gaurav Gogoi, president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and Jorhat MP, expressed optimism about a Congress victory, dismissing claims that the party's strategy would be swayed by the AIUDF's electoral maneuvers.

“The people of Assam are well aware of AIUDF's political tactics. Their strategy remains unchanged, and they continue to act as a B-team for the BJP,” Gogoi claimed.

“We are currently awaiting the election details and dates from the Election Commission. I assure you that Congress will emerge victorious in the Nagaon bypoll. Consider this a declaration,” he added.

The AIUDF has already announced Rejaul Karim Sarkar as its candidate for the by-election and has ruled out any collaboration with the Congress.

Party leader Badruddin Ajmal recently declined the Congress' proposal for a joint campaign, asserting that the AIUDF will contest independently.

Meanwhile, the BJP has ramped up its preparations. During a recent organizational meeting in Morigaon, party officials initiated their campaign efforts, setting an ambitious goal of achieving a lead of approximately 90,000 votes from the constituency.

The Raijor Dal has yet to finalize its decision regarding participation in the bypoll. Party president and Sivasagar MP Akhil Gogoi has raised concerns about the merits of supporting the Congress, citing instances of elected officials switching allegiances or compromising with the BJP.

The regional party is currently evaluating its options before making a formal announcement regarding the by-election.
