Hailakandi, April 7: The Algapur-Katlicherra Assembly constituency in Hailakandi district is gearing up for a highly competitive election.

Notably, three incumbent MLAs from the district are set to face off in this newly formed constituency, which has a significant minority population due to recent delimitation.

All three MLAs—Nijam Uddin Choudhury, Suzam Uddin Laskar, and Jakir Hussain Laskar—have been suspended from the AIUDF for alleged anti-party actions.

Jakir Hussain Laskar has switched allegiance to the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) just prior to the election announcement and is running as a candidate for the AGP-BJP alliance. The other two MLAs are contesting as Independents.

Jubair Anam Mazumdar, representing the Indian National Congress (INC), is also in the race. An architect by profession, Mazumdar has built his political base through the NSUI and is concentrating on local issues.

While there are 15 candidates in total, the main contest is anticipated to be among these four individuals.

The constituency boasts an electorate of 278,364, which includes 903 new voters. The breakdown shows 145,645 male voters, 132,717 female voters, and two transgender voters.

Political analysts suggest that the demographic shift in this newly established constituency, particularly the addition of around 50,000 Hindu voters, will play a crucial role in determining the election outcome.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister of State Ajoy Tamta, and AGP chief Atul Bora, among other prominent NDA figures, have been actively campaigning for AGP candidate Jakir Hussain Laskar.

Conversely, former Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot has been supporting the Congress candidate.

Many candidates are adopting a grassroots approach by organizing small meetings in villages to connect with voters.

Local residents have expressed various concerns. Fakrul Islam, a farmer, highlighted that the Algapur-Katlicherra constituency has lagged in development compared to other regions. He pointed out that the Bakrihawar area often faces flooding during the monsoon, and there has been no effective flood management plan to assist local farmers.

Additionally, Najrul Haque, a small trader, criticized the poor condition of rural roads, stating that despite having a minister from the constituency in Prafulla Kumar Mahanta’s Cabinet twice (in 1985 and 1991), significant development has not occurred in Algapur.
