Guwahati, Oct 4: The vigorous campaigning for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll wrapped up at 5 PM on Sunday, with the BJP, Congress, and AIUDF making their final appeals and intensifying their criticisms of each other ahead of the polling on October 6.
On the last day of campaigning, prominent leaders from the three major parties escalated their efforts as the constituency transitioned into the silence period.
During a rally in Lahorighat, Assam minister and BJP figure Pijush Hazarika directed his remarks at Ajmal and Congress MLA Asif Mohammad Nazar, urging voters to back the BJP.
Hazarika commented on Ajmal's health, stating that the AIUDF leader is “an ailing man” who would struggle to function without assistance.
“He is a respected individual but is in poor health and cannot manage alone. I suggest he cease campaigning and focus on his treatment in Dubai,” Hazarika remarked.
BJP state president Dilip Saikia and Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah also participated in the campaign on the final day in the Raha Assembly segment.
Saikia, addressing supporters after a “Vijay Sankalp Padyatra,” expressed, “The public backs BJP because they recognize the party's contributions. There is a unified call, ‘We will elect Devasish Sharma for the Nagaon bypolls.’”
Saikia shared updates about his padyatra across booths 263-265 of Raha and a subsequent campaign meeting attended by Baruah.
Meanwhile, the Congress organized campaign meetings in Lahorighat and Raha to support Sibamoni Bora.
In Lahorighat, APCC president Gaurav Gogoi, AICC secretary and Assam in-charge Manoj Chauhan, MLA Asif Mohammad Nazar, and MLA Baby Begum joined Congress supporters at an election gathering.
The party emphasized its focus on “unity, harmony, democracy, and development” during the event.
Additionally, the Congress held a rally in Raha, claiming a significant turnout in favor of Bora.
Gogoi intensified his criticism of AIUDF and Ajmal during the final campaign day, alleging a close political alliance between Ajmal and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
“Maulana Badruddin Ajmal is a close ally of Himanta Biswa Sarma in Assam politics,” Gogoi stated, accusing the AIUDF chief of acting as the BJP’s “B Team.”
Gogoi further asserted that the Nagaon bypoll would mark the end of AIUDF, predicting the party's dissolution post-elections. “Sarma will eventually bring Ajmal into the BJP,” he claimed.
The necessity for the Nagaon bypoll arose after former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the Lok Sabha seat and subsequently contested and won the Dispur Assembly seat on a BJP ticket.
With campaigning concluded, the constituency has entered the obligatory 48-hour silence period, which began at 5 PM on October 4. Voting is set for October 6, with counting scheduled for October 9.
