Significance of INS Mahendragiri's Commissioning

On Saturday, the stealth frigate 'INS Mahendragiri' was commissioned in Visakhapatnam, with Defense Minister Rajnath Singh highlighting Andhra Pradesh's pivotal role in the nation's defense framework. This event also marked the successful completion of the Indian Navy's Advanced Project 17A Nilgiri-class warship series. During the commissioning ceremony held on the eastern coast, Singh elaborated on the state's strategic importance across various combat domains.

Andhra Pradesh: A New Powerhouse in Defense Manufacturing

The minister emphasized that Andhra Pradesh is emerging as a new powerhouse for defense and aerospace manufacturing in India. The state is contributing significantly across all domains, including air, sea, land, and unmanned systems. In Puttaparthi, the foundation stone for the Core Integration and Flight Testing Center for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) was laid. Additionally, a new naval system manufacturing facility by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) was inaugurated in Anakapalli district, where autonomous underwater vehicles, torpedoes, and underwater countermeasure systems will be produced.

Domestic Production of Defense Systems

Singh noted that weapons systems that were previously imported will now be manufactured close to Visakhapatnam. The AMCA will operate in the skies, while BDL's naval systems will function in the depths of the sea, and drones from Kurnool will enhance unmanned operations. The commissioning of INS Mahendragiri signifies Andhra Pradesh's contribution to strengthening India's defense capabilities across all domains.

INS Mahendragiri: A Technological Marvel

Constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), this multi-mission blue-water warship weighs approximately 6,670 tons and is over 75% indigenous in terms of components and technology. The frontline warship is equipped with indigenous rocket and torpedo launchers, an advanced electronic warfare suite, and possesses the lethal capability to launch BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles. Singh emphasized the Indian Navy's growing role as a 'net security provider' and preferred security partner in the crucial Indo-Pacific region, referencing recent strategic actions to secure international commercial shipping lanes.

The Importance of a Capable Navy

Singh remarked that recent events have reaffirmed the necessity of a capable and responsive navy for any nation. Following the onset of conflict in West Asia, the Indian Navy successfully secured 18 commercial vessels carrying essential goods worth over ₹9,000 crores through 'Operation Energy Security'. This demonstrates that the navy has emerged not only as a combat force but also as a robust protector of India's economic interests.
