Investigation Initiated Following Controversial Incident

On Friday, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha announced a magisterial inquiry into the death of a man during an alleged 'fake encounter' involving security forces in Ganderbal.

The inquiry aims to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure justice is achieved, as stated by the lieutenant governor's office.

This decision follows concerns raised by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Peoples Democratic Party leader Mehbooba Mufti regarding the events that unfolded on Tuesday night.

The deceased, Rashid Ahmad Mughal, was reportedly claimed by his family to have no connections to terrorism, prompting them to call for an investigation into the circumstances of his death.

Abdullah emphasized on Thursday that the family's assertions should not be overlooked and called for a transparent and timely investigation, urging that the findings be made public.

Mufti also expressed her concerns, stating that there are claims suggesting it was a fake encounter. She noted the conflicting statements from the Army regarding Mughal's identity, initially labeling him as a foreign militant before later suggesting he was locally linked to militancy.

Senior Superintendent of Police Khalil Ahmad Poswal informed The Indian Express that authorities are confirming whether Rashid had any militant affiliations, mentioning that his brother resides in Pakistan. He added that the operation was conducted by the Army, during which an AK-56 rifle was recovered.

An unnamed defense spokesperson remarked that the family's claims are subject to scrutiny, asserting that the truth will emerge in due course.

The Army's XV Corps reported that a joint operation was initiated with the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the Arahama area of Ganderbal based on specific intelligence. During the operation, soldiers noticed suspicious behavior, leading to an exchange of gunfire.

Later, the Army stated that the cordon had been tactically adjusted amid ongoing firing, resulting in the elimination of one terrorist.
