Celebrating National Science Day with Solar Innovations

On the occasion of National Science Day, a remarkable showcase of solar energy innovation took place in the village of Sanawadiya, near Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Students had the opportunity to observe a battery-free solar cooker and a biodiversity farm at the Jimmy McGilligan Center for Sustainable Development.

This center, led by the Padma Shri awardee Janak Palta McGilligan, serves as a vibrant model for sustainable living and renewable energy. It provides training to women, students, and farmers in rural areas on utilizing solar energy, promoting smoke-free cooking and environmental conservation.

On National Science Day (February 28), students from various schools and colleges visited the center. They witnessed a demonstration of the battery-free solar cooker, which cooks food using direct sunlight without the need for batteries or electricity, and even tried their hand at it. Students prepared red amaranth vegetables, noting that it cooked faster than instant noodles.

Additionally, at the center's biodiversity farm, students learned about organic farming, various plant species, beekeeping, and sustainable agricultural practices. The center also features solar-powered facilities such as solar dryers, a bakery, and a community kitchen, which have collectively saved over a ton of wood and reduced carbon emissions over the years.

This initiative has successfully inspired students about science, environmental protection, and indigenous technologies. Janak McGilligan shared that the center has trained millions in solar energy and sustainable living, with a significant focus on school and college students.

Such initiatives play a crucial role in making India self-reliant in solar energy and combating climate change. Sanawadiya has now emerged as an inspiring hub for the solar revolution!
