Transforming Agriculture with Organic Fertilizer

In Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, a local resident has developed an organic fertilizer using cow dung and urine from indigenous cows. This innovative solution allows for farming on 35 bighas, equivalent to six acres. The method has gained significant attention, and Gurmeet Singh, the 35-year-old farmer behind this initiative, is in line for a state-level award. Gurmeet hails from a farming family in Rasoolpur village.

For the past five years, Gurmeet has been cultivating sugarcane using this organic fertilizer. Additionally, he employs this fertilizer for various crops, resulting in improved yields. He has successfully grown wheat, rice, and a variety of vegetables using this method.

Gurmeet explained that this chemical-free fertilizer is easy to produce and can significantly enhance agricultural productivity. According to him, the dung and urine from one indigenous cow can support farming on up to 25 acres, requiring 10 kilograms of dung and 5 kilograms of urine per acre.

Fertilizer Preparation Process

To create the fertilizer, a mixture of dung and urine is combined with three kilograms of jaggery and two kilograms of gram flour. This mixture is then placed under a banyan tree with two kilograms of soil and mixed with 200 liters of water. The preparation time is shorter in summer, taking only 15 days, while in winter, it can take 30 to 40 days. Once ready, it can be easily applied during irrigation, allowing for a gradual release of nutrients. Neem and hemp are sprayed on the crops to protect them from pests.

Gurmeet further emphasized the importance of utilizing cow dung and urine, stating that many people abandon non-milking cows, which is a mistake. Farmers can profit by collecting and selling these resources. As awareness of Gurmeet's fertilizer spreads, more individuals are visiting him to learn about the production process.

Farmer Sukveer noted that Gurmeet practices genuine farming methods. The use of organic fertilizer not only enhances soil fertility but also results in healthier crops. Another farmer mentioned that using organic fertilizer helps save costs associated with chemical fertilizers.

On February 27, a two-day state-level jaggery festival is set to take place in Lucknow. Gurmeet Singh has been selected as the sole representative from the district for this festival, which is a significant achievement for a jaggery producer from the area, as highlighted by inspector Ravindra Kumar Singh.
