Launch of a Groundbreaking Project for Vision Improvement

Guwahati, Dec 4: A groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing access to presbyopic spectacles was inaugurated today at the Khetri Post Office in Kamrup (Metro).

Named “Post Office Delivers the Gift of Clear Vision,” this project is a collaborative effort involving India Post, the World Health Organization (WHO) India, Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya (SSDN) in Guwahati, and Vision Spring.

This unique global pilot program addresses a significant public health issue: globally, only a third of individuals in need of spectacles actually obtain them.

Current discussions at WHO and the United Nations have underscored the pressing need to broaden access to refractive care services.

The initiative aims to facilitate the distribution of reading glasses and other spectacles through non-healthcare venues like post offices. India Post has chosen Assam as the pilot state, with five post offices earmarked for the initial phase.

Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya is leading the technical aspects of the project, while WHO-India is aiding in both global and national coordination. Vision Spring is responsible for providing the spectacles during this pilot phase. The goal is to develop a model that can be scaled for national and potentially international implementation.

The project was officially launched by Abhishek Jain, Director of Postal Services, alongside representatives from all partner organizations. Prof (Dr) Harsha Bhattacharjee emphasized the technical contributions of SSDN. The launch event witnessed enthusiastic participation from the local community.
