Transforming Resources into Revenue

In Saharanpur, a farmer named Aditya Tyagi has demonstrated the value of recognizing and utilizing resources effectively. After retiring from his position as a Forest Range Officer, he embraced organic farming and the rearing of indigenous cows. Today, he generates substantial income by selling cow dung products.

Profits from Cow Dung Surpass Milk Sales Aditya Tyagi is not solely reliant on milk sales; he earns more from cow dung. He crafts small cow dung cakes and logs, which he sells in garlands. A garland containing 20-21 cakes, each weighing approximately 350 grams, is sold for 290 rupees. What is often considered waste has turned into 'gold' for him.

Strong Demand Both Offline and Online Initially, Aditya sold his products offline, but he recently ventured into online sales and received an overwhelming response. In just three days, he sold cow dung products worth 9,000 rupees, averaging about 3,000 rupees in daily sales. The demand has surged during the Holi season, particularly from Hyderabad, making it challenging to fulfill orders.

Pure Cow Dung from Indigenous Breeds He maintains 6 to 7 indigenous cows, including Sahiwal, Tharparkar, Ganga Tihri, and Gir breeds. The pure dung from these cows is used to create his products. Aditya believes that cow dung from indigenous cows is particularly beneficial for religious rituals and the environment.

Sales of 8-9 Lakhs in Eight Months Over the past eight months, Aditya has achieved sales of 8 to 9 lakhs from his cow dung products. He has proven that with the right insight and innovative thinking, even seemingly ordinary resources can become significant income sources.

Views on Indigenous vs. Jersey Cows Aditya observes that many people prefer Jersey cows, which are hybrids. However, he emphasizes the unique value of indigenous cows and the superior quality of their products. His success illustrates how traditional resources can be integrated with modern marketing strategies to empower farmers.
