Indore Hosts 34th Annual Environmental Dialogue Week Focused on Climate Action
Inauguration of Environmental Dialogue Week
Indore celebrated World Environment Day 2026 with the commencement of the 34th Annual Environmental Dialogue Week at the Jimmy Magilligan Center for Sustainable Development on Saturday, May 30. The event kicked off with prayers dedicated to nature, led by Shri Virendra Goyal, Dr. Neerja Pauranik, and Dr. Janak Palta Magilligan.
Theme of Collective Action
Welcoming the attendees, Dr. Janak Palta Magilligan highlighted that this dialogue has been held annually since 1992 and is now in its 34th year. She mentioned that the United Nations Environment Programme has set the theme for World Environment Day 2026 as 'Collective Action', aligning with the week’s goal of raising awareness about environmental protection and sustainable development.
Inspiring Youth for Climate Action
Dr. Janak emphasized that the primary aim of this week-long event is to motivate youth and the general public to adopt environmentally friendly lifestyles. She stated that addressing climate change challenges requires collective efforts, starting with individual responsibility towards their surroundings.
Personal Journey Towards Sustainable Development
In her address, she shared her personal journey towards understanding sustainable development, which began during her participation in the Earth Summit in 1992. This experience inspired her to embrace an eco-friendly lifestyle.
Transformation of a Dry Well into a Green Campus
Dr. Janak explained how she and her late husband, James R. Magilligan, transformed a six-acre area into a green and self-sustaining model, starting with the revival of a 40-year-old dry well.
Today, this area is recognized as a plastic-free, pollution-free, organic farming-based, and fully solar-powered green campus, featuring a solar thermal kitchen, rainwater harvesting, and numerous examples of eco-friendly living.
Training Community Volunteers
Over the past 26 years, through six-month training programs, more than 6,000 uneducated and economically disadvantaged tribal women have been trained as community volunteers. These trained women have played a significant role in bringing about social, economic, and environmental changes in over 500 villages.
Expert Insights on Environmental Protection
The opening address was delivered by trustee Virendra Goyal, who emphasized the need for environmental protection, prudent use of natural resources, and sustainable lifestyles as essential for our times.
Renowned biotechnologist Dr. Anurag Tiwari stressed the importance of conserving water and air, stating that preserving natural resources for future generations is our greatest responsibility.
Sharing Experiences in Forest Conservation
Chief guest P.N. Mishra, Chief Conservator of Forests for Indore, shared his thoughts on environmental protection and the power of positive thinking. He recounted a successful initiative of planting one lakh saplings along the banks of the Shipra River, achieved through collaboration with administration and social organizations.
He also mentioned the Shankar Gadh Hill conservation campaign in Dewas, asserting that significant changes in environmental protection are possible through collective efforts. He referred to Dr. Janak Palta Magilligan as a 'ray of sunshine' for inspiring society towards sustainable development.
Encouraging Community Responsibility
Senior psychologist Dr. Ram Gulam from Malvanchal remarked that environmental protection is not solely the government's responsibility but a duty of every citizen. He urged society to draw inspiration from the lives of Jimmy and Janak Magilligan to understand their responsibilities towards the environment.
Dr. Anurag Tiwari, present as a special guest, stated that living in harmony with nature is the foundation of mental peace, positive energy, and a balanced life.
Attendance of Distinguished Guests
The event was conducted by MSW intern Nilesh Chauhan from DAVV, who concluded by thanking all guests, participants, and students.
Notable attendees included retired professor Jayashree Sikka from Gujarati College, Mahendra Dhakad from the Collectorate office, economics intern Tuhina Jha from DAVV, Amar Nargesh, PG students from Malvanchal Psychiatry, and numerous students from St. Paul Institute.
