India's Struggles in AFC U20 Women's Asian Cup

In a disappointing match on Sunday, the Indian U20 women's national team was overwhelmed by Australia, suffering a 0-5 loss during the AFC U20 Women's Asian Cup 2026 held at Pathum Thani Stadium in Thailand.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) reported that Skye Halmarick scored a hat-trick (38', 39', 48'), putting Australia firmly in control, while Danella Brutus (54') and Daisy Brown (90+4') contributed two additional goals.

India's Knockout Stage Aspirations Remain

Following this defeat, India finds itself at the bottom of Group C, having earned no points from two matches. However, a victory in their upcoming group-stage encounter against Chinese Taipei on Wednesday could still allow Joakim Alexandersson's team to advance to the knockout rounds.

Match Overview: Initial Exchanges and Australian Dominance

Despite the final score, the Young Tigresses started positively, launching several counter-attacks against Australia's possession-based play. In the fourth minute, Sulanjana Raul made a break down the left, delivering a low cross to Sibani Devi Nongmeikapam, who was forced into a challenging angle and ultimately lost possession.

Shortly after, Anju Chanu Kayenpaibam's cross from the opposite side was intercepted. Australia's Avaani Prakash created the first significant opportunity for her team, receiving a pass on the right before her shot was saved by Indian goalkeeper Monalisha Devi Moirangthem. Anju later attempted a long-range free-kick that went over the bar.

Australia Takes Control

The Young Matildas opened the scoring in the 38th minute when Butrus was fouled in the Indian penalty area by Cindy Colney, leading to a penalty that Halmarick successfully converted.

Just a minute later, Halmarick scored again, heading in a cross from Peta Trimis to double Australia's lead.

Australia's Second Half Dominance

The second half saw Australia continue their strong performance, with Halmarick completing her hat-trick in the 48th minute, her shot deflecting into the net.

By the 54th minute, the Young Matildas had extended their lead to 4-0 when Butrus broke into the Indian box and scored past Monalisha.

India's Late Attempts and Final Goal

India continued to fight until the end, with Monalisha making crucial saves against Trimis. The best chance for India came in the 85th minute when Bhumika Devi Khumukcham delivered a precise cross to Sibani, who unfortunately headed it wide.

In the dying moments of the match, Remi Thokchom made a goalline clearance, but Australia managed to score their fifth goal in injury time when Brown, a substitute, intercepted the ball from Thoibisana Chanu Toijam and slotted it past the goalkeeper.
