High-Stakes Quarter-Final Match

The Indian U17 women's football team is set to compete against the host nation, China, in the quarter-finals of the AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup 2026. This crucial match will take place at the Suzhou Sports Centre Stadium on Monday. A win for the Young Tigresses would secure their spot in the FIFA U17 Women's World Cup in Morocco 2026. Despite hosting the U17 men's and women's World Cups in 2017 and 2022, India has yet to qualify for the global stage through the tournament.

Preparing for the Big Stage

For the past two weeks, the Young Tigresses have been training in a familiar environment, staying at the Suzhou Taimei Xiangguli Hotel and practicing at the nearby Suzhou Taihu Football Sports Centre, which features eight pitches. The quarter-final match will be held at the 35,000-seat Suzhou Sports Centre Stadium, where over 10,000 fans attended China's opening match against Myanmar on May 1. The team is gearing up for a vibrant atmosphere as they face the hosts.

Head coach Pamela Conti emphasized the team's focus on the upcoming match, stating, "We are approaching this match with excitement and a strong desire to win. We recognize the strength of our opponents, but we will strive to bring joy to our country."

Player's Perspective: Eye on the Goal

Midfielder Bonifilia Shullai expressed her excitement after visiting the stadium for the first time, saying, "It feels great to face the hosts, China. We know the crowd will be supportive of their team." She added, "I am proud of our journey so far and hope to deliver a strong performance. Our ultimate goal is to qualify for the World Cup, and we will keep pushing until the final whistle."

The 16-year-old from Shillong noted that playing in such a significant stadium at the AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup is an incredible experience that will benefit their future careers.

Road to the Quarter-finals

India secured their place in the quarter-finals with a dominant 4-0 win over Lebanon in their final group match, marking the first time the country has reached the knockout stage of the AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup. The Young Tigresses also made history as the first Indian women's team to reach the knockout stage of any Asian Cup since the 2004 AFC U19 Women's Championship.

China, one of the tournament favorites, topped Group A with three victories, defeating Myanmar (6-0), Vietnam (3-0), and Thailand (6-0). In the knockout stage, if the match ends in a draw after 90 minutes, the winner will be determined by penalties.

Coach Conti on Facing China

Coach Conti acknowledged China's strength, stating, "They are one of the top teams in Asia and will be highly motivated playing at home. They have the tallest average height in the tournament and possess physically strong players who attack in numbers, so we must be defensively focused."

Historically, India and China have faced each other only once at this level, during the AFC U16 Women's Championship qualifiers in 2008, where China narrowly won 1-0. Despite the challenge, the Young Tigresses are confident, having prepared extensively for this moment.

Focus on the Goal

Centre-back Abhista Basnett, who captained the team against Japan earlier in the tournament, emphasized the need to stay focused. "We are thrilled to be in the quarter-finals, but our journey isn't over yet. Our full attention is on the next match, as playing in the World Cup has always been our dream," she stated.

The 15-year-old from Pakyong, Sikkim, highlighted the importance of maintaining mental focus despite the atmosphere surrounding the hosts. "China is a formidable team, but once we step onto the pitch, we concentrate on our game and our aspirations. We are well-prepared and ready to give our all."

A Learning Experience

Throughout the tournament, Coach Conti has emphasized the significance of experience in player development. Competing against a strong team like China in front of a large crowd is a vital step in their growth.

"This is a valuable experience for the players. Matches like these contribute to their development. It's essential to respect China's strength, but the girls should enjoy this moment, as it will create lasting memories," Conti remarked.

A Message to the Nation

The emotional bond within the squad has been a defining aspect of India's campaign. Abhista expressed gratitude for the support received after qualifying, stating, "My message is to keep motivating us, regardless of the outcome. This journey has united us like a family, and that bond is invaluable."

Conti believes this match holds significance beyond the game itself, encouraging the players to inspire future generations of girls in India. "They must relish this moment, as football brings emotions that are unparalleled. This match could lead us to glory," she concluded.

The match will be streamed live on the AFC Asian Cup YouTube Channel, starting at 17:00 IST.
