India's Strategic Response to Pakistan's Missile Threats
Tensions Rise Between India and Pakistan
Recently, tensions escalated dramatically between India and Pakistan, with Pakistan launching missile attacks across all Indian borders. These strikes included missile and drone assaults targeting civilians, reminiscent of tactics used by Hamas. However, India's air defense systems successfully intercepted every missile, with the S-400 air defense system playing a crucial role. This system, acquired through a deal with Russia, was deployed for the first time against Pakistan, proving to be highly effective.
Ajit Doval's Upcoming Visit to Moscow
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is expected to visit Moscow next week to advocate for the expedited delivery of remaining S-400 air defense systems, which are scheduled to arrive by 2026. During his trip, he will participate in the 13th International Meeting of High Representatives for Security Issues, taking place from May 27 to 29, chaired by Sergey Shoigu, the Secretary of Russia's Security Council.
India's Urgent Need for S-400 Deliveries
In 2018, India purchased S-400 Triumph air defense systems for $5.4 billion (approximately ₹35,000 crores). While three units have already been delivered, two remain pending. Due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and other military challenges, the fourth squadron is now expected by the end of 2025, with the fifth squadron anticipated in 2026.
S-400's Recent Performance
The capabilities of the S-400 came into the spotlight recently when it successfully shot down over 300 Pakistani drones, following heightened tensions that escalated into cross-border hostilities after India's Operation Sindoor.
Countering Pakistan's Aggressive Attacks
The Indian Air Force's Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) effectively countered Pakistan's aggressive missile attacks. A combination of the Russian S-400 Triumph system, indigenous Akash and Astra missiles, Barak-8 medium-range surface-to-air missiles, and advanced anti-drone systems were deployed to neutralize various threats, including Chinese PL-15 missiles and Turkish drones.
Understanding the S-400 System
The S-400 is one of the world's most advanced long-range air defense systems, manufactured by Russia's Almaz-Antey and integrated into India's strategic air defense command. It is designed to detect, track, and destroy a wide range of aerial threats, including aircraft, drones, missiles, and even ballistic missiles.
With its advanced missiles, the S-400 can detect and engage targets up to 400 kilometers (250 miles) away, making it effective against long-range threats. The system can also target aerial threats at altitudes ranging from 0 to 30 kilometers, including stealth aircraft, drones, and ballistic missiles.
Deployment of S-400 Squadrons
One squadron has been deployed in the Pathankot sector to secure the Punjab-Jammu and Srinagar areas, while another is stationed along the western border to protect the Rajasthan-Gujarat frontier. A third squadron has been positioned in the Siliguri Corridor, which connects the northeastern states with the rest of India.
