Overview of India's Foreign Ministry Briefing

During the weekly press briefing held by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed various international and regional matters. Key topics included the gas plant incident in Qatar, the situation in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, a security meeting of BRICS nations, India-China relations, maritime traffic in the Persian Gulf, defense collaboration between India and the UAE, and recent events concerning the Hindu community in Bangladesh.

Tragic Gas Plant Explosion in Qatar

The briefing began with a discussion on the devastating explosion at a gas facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City. Jaiswal expressed deep sorrow over the incident, which resulted in the deaths of 12 Indian nationals, along with several others from different countries. He noted that a total of 66 individuals were injured, although it remains unclear how many of them were Indian. The Ministry is in contact with local authorities to identify the deceased and facilitate the repatriation of their remains to India. The government is maintaining communication with the families of the victims and providing all possible assistance.

Response to Pakistan's Defense Minister's Remarks

In response to recent comments made by Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Jaiswal stated that Pakistan is attempting to divert attention from its internal crises and human rights violations by making baseless accusations against India. He explained that the protests occurring in Pakistan-administered Kashmir are a result of long-standing economic exploitation, deprivation of fundamental rights, and administrative oppression faced by the local population. India has accused Pakistan of excessive use of police force in response to these protests, shutting down internet services, and blocking the supply of essential goods and medicines while taking harsh actions against unarmed civilians.

BRICS National Security Meeting Insights

The Ministry also shared insights from the 16th BRICS National Security Advisors meeting held in New Delhi. Jaiswal mentioned that National Security Advisor Ajit Doval held bilateral meetings with counterparts from Iran, Ethiopia, Brazil, China, and South Africa. Discussions focused on non-traditional security challenges, threats arising from new technologies, and cooperation in cybersecurity and counter-terrorism. The outcomes of recent BRICS working group meetings were also reviewed.

Positive Developments in India-China Relations

The Ministry indicated positive developments following a meeting between NSA Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Jaiswal noted that both sides reviewed recent developments in bilateral relations and acknowledged progress towards gradual normalization. India emphasized the need for stable, predictable, and constructive relations to foster trust and better understanding between the two nations.

Status of Indian Vessels in the Persian Gulf

Regarding the status of Indian vessels in the Persian Gulf, Jaiswal reported that currently, 10 Indian-flagged ships are present in the region. Additionally, two Indian vessels have entered the Gulf, indicating a normalization of maritime traffic. He mentioned that since the agreement on June 17, 11 ships heading to India have passed through the Strait of Hormuz, including three Indian crude oil tankers, each carrying approximately 285,000 metric tons of oil. Furthermore, foreign vessels carrying LPG, fertilizers, and other goods have also safely navigated the area. India hopes that the remaining Indian ships will also cross safely soon.

Strengthening Defense Ties with the UAE

On the defense partnership between India and the United Arab Emirates, Jaiswal highlighted the significant strengthening of ties over recent years, with defense cooperation emerging as a crucial pillar of this growing relationship. He stated that the defense partnership is becoming increasingly deep and comprehensive.

Concerns Over Attacks on Hindu Idols in Bangladesh

The Ministry expressed concern over incidents involving the desecration of Hindu deities and images in Bangladesh. India noted that protests have erupted following these events and expects the Bangladeshi government to control extremist elements and ensure the safety of minority communities.
