India's Space Capabilities Crucial for National Security, Says DRDO Chief
Significance of Space in National Security
On Thursday, Samir V. Kamat, the head of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), emphasized that space has evolved from being merely a supportive tool for national security to a critical domain that will influence the outcomes of future conflicts. He urged for a comprehensive national approach to bridge the gap in India's space capabilities, especially as rival nations rapidly expand their space programs.
Strengthening Defence and Space Collaboration
Speaking at the fourth Indian Defence Space Symposium held at the Manekshaw Centre, Kamat highlighted the increasing role of DRDO in military space operations. He pointed out that without enhanced investment and collaboration, it would be extremely challenging to catch up in this sector. While ISRO remains the primary agency for India's civilian space program, the establishment of the Defence Space Agency has assigned DRDO the responsibility for military aspects of space.
Growing Responsibilities and Collaborative Models
Kamat noted that this responsibility currently constitutes a small part of DRDO's overall mandate but is rapidly expanding. He stressed the need to enhance this role to keep pace with competitors. To address this gap, DRDO is adopting a collaborative model that includes startups, small and medium enterprises, and academic institutions. The organization has already established DRDO industry-academic excellence centers in three to four of its 15 DIA excellence centers, with space identified as a priority area.
Interest from Academia and Startups
Kamat expressed optimism regarding the significant interest from academic institutions and startups in contributing to the defence sector's space program. He is hopeful that India will achieve critical technological advancements and sovereign capabilities in the coming years.
