India's Semiconductor Initiative Set to Generate Thousands of Jobs

India's semiconductor ecosystem is on track to create 50,000 to 60,000 jobs, as revealed by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. With a vision to capture 10% of the global market, the government has set ambitious targets for training engineers and enhancing manufacturing capabilities through the Semicon 2.0 Scheme. This initiative aims to support various aspects of the semiconductor value chain, from design to talent development. New Delhi, Aug 31: According to Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the semiconductor industry being cultivated in India is projected to generate between 50,000 and 60,000 direct employment opportunities.


He noted that India is anticipated to capture nearly 10% of the global semiconductor market in the upcoming years. Students from smaller cities have already contributed to the design of over 250 chips, showcasing the potential of the country's talent pool.


The minister highlighted that India has surpassed its goal of training 85,000 semiconductor engineers in just four years, setting a new objective to develop an additional 100,000 engineers.


In some instances, commercial production began a mere 13 months after the initial groundbreaking, with approvals being granted in as little as 90 days in various cases.


The government has officially established all six components of the Semicon 2.0 Scheme, a crucial advancement in enhancing India's semiconductor design and manufacturing capabilities.


This initiative builds on the success of the initial Semicon India Programme, offering fiscal and infrastructural support throughout the semiconductor value chain, including chip design, fabrication, packaging, equipment, materials, research and development, and talent cultivation.


The six components of Semicon 2.0 include Design; Machines and Materials; Establishing additional Fabs; Strengthening the ATMP/OSAT industry; Research and Development; and Talent Development.


Projects under Semicon 2.0 will typically span up to six years, with the scheme open for applications for an initial three-year period.


The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) will serve as the central agency for Semicon 2.0, responsible for inviting applications, conducting technical and financial evaluations, recommending applicants, and overseeing the implementation process.


ISM may collaborate with C-DAC for the design and deployment categories. Additionally, the mission plans to introduce semiconductor deep-tech awards starting in 2026 to encourage niche innovations.


The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology will allocate budgetary resources for fiscal support, with disbursements managed by the nodal agency based on approved criteria.


A mid-term evaluation will be conducted after three years of implementation, or as necessary, to assess the scheme's effectiveness and consider any adjustments or extensions.
