India's Rooftop Solar Capacity Reaches 1,825.62 MW Across Government Buildings

India has made significant progress in renewable energy with the installation of 1,825.62 MW of rooftop solar capacity across over 91,000 government buildings. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is encouraging states to utilize vacant rooftops for solar panels, while the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana supports individual households with financial assistance. This initiative aims to enhance energy justice and empower the underprivileged, showcasing India's commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

Significant Solar Energy Installation in Government Buildings

New Delhi, Dec 2: As of November 4, a total of 1,825.62 MW of rooftop solar capacity has been established on 91,574 government structures across various Central ministries and departments, as well as states and Union Territories, according to information presented in Parliament on Tuesday.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has urged all states and Union Territories to direct their departments and institutions to utilize the vacant rooftops of their buildings for solar panel installations. Additionally, all Central Government Ministries and Departments have been asked to facilitate the installation of rooftop solar systems on their properties.

Minister of State for Power, Shripad Yesso Naik, highlighted in the Rajya Sabha that saturating government buildings with rooftop solar installations is a key aspect of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.

He noted that there is no Central Financial Assistance (CFA) available for government buildings, as the installation of rooftop solar systems is financially feasible without it.

Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, individual households can receive a CFA of Rs 30,000 per kWp for the first 2 kWp and Rs 18,000 per kWp for any additional capacity, with a maximum subsidy applicable to a 3 kWp rooftop solar system.

For Group Housing Societies and Residential Welfare Associations, the CFA is set at Rs 18,000 per kWp, with a rooftop solar capacity limit of 500 kWp.

In special category states and Union Territories, including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, northeastern states, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep, the CFA is increased by 10%.

The minister also stated that there are currently no plans to raise the CFA under this scheme.

Through initiatives such as PM-KUSUM, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, PM-JANMAN, and 'One Sun, One World, One Grid', India is making strides towards energy equity, empowering the underprivileged, and enhancing South-South cooperation.
