India's Upcoming World Test Championship Journey
Next month marks the commencement of India's journey in the new cycle of the World Test Championship with their tour to England. This also signifies the dawn of a new era in Indian cricket. Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new Test captain, and for the first time in a long while, the Indian Test team will compete without stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Under Gill's leadership, India is set to face England in their opening Test series, followed by several challenging encounters ahead.
In a complete cycle of the World Test Championship, each team is required to play six series, comprising three at home and three abroad. India's initial challenge kicks off on June 20, when they will begin a five-match Test series against England. The pitches in England, known for their lush green grass, are expected to offer significant swing to the ball. Without Rohit and Virat, this tour could present numerous difficulties for the team.
Following the England series, India will host two countries for home series. The West Indies will visit India in October for two Test matches, and South Africa will follow in November for another two Tests. Looking ahead to 2026, India is scheduled to play only four Test matches, all in the latter part of the year. In August 2026, the Indian team will tour England for a two-match Test series, and in October 2026, they will head to New Zealand.
The WTC cycle for India from 2025 to 2027 will conclude similarly to the previous cycle, with the final match in 2027. Before this final, India will face Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, but this time, the Australian team will be touring India.
