Mixed Outcomes in Men's Singles
In the opening round of the China Masters 2026 held in Shenzhen, India's prominent badminton player Lakshya Sen faced an early exit, while former world champion Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the pre-quarterfinals. According to reports, Lakshya, ranked 13th globally, was defeated by Canada's Victor Lai, who is ranked 9th, with scores of 21-14, 21-7 in a match lasting 38 minutes. Lakshya started strong, leading 4-0, but Lai quickly turned the tide, reaching an 11-8 lead at the break. The Canadian player then surged ahead, ultimately winning the first game. The second game proved even more challenging for Lakshya, who trailed 11-4 at the interval before Lai secured a straightforward victory. This match marked another inconsistent performance for Lakshya this season, following his earlier success in reaching the All England Open final in March, but struggling since then, including a second-round exit at the World Championships in New Delhi last month.
Srikanth Advances with Strong Performance
In contrast, Srikanth showcased a commendable performance, defeating Chi Yu-jen from Chinese Taipei, ranked 21st in the world, with scores of 21-16, 21-15 in just 35 minutes at the BWF Super 750 event. The world No. 34 Indian player is set to face Lai in the upcoming pre-quarterfinals.
Satwik and Chirag Secure Victory
The men's doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, currently ranked 5th, also kicked off their campaign successfully, winning against Malaysia's Junaidi Arif and Kang Khai Xing with scores of 21-11, 21-16 in a 40-minute match. The fourth-seeded Indian duo encountered a tougher challenge in the second game, where the score was tied at 16-16. However, they managed to pull ahead with a decisive five-point run to clinch the match. They will next compete against France's Christo Popov and Toma Junior Popov in the pre-quarterfinals.
Tanvi Sharma's Impressive Performance
In the women's singles category, Tanvi Sharma continued her impressive form this season, securing a victory over Denmark's Amalie Schulz, ranked 40th in the world, with scores of 21-16, 21-17. The world No. 26 Indian player will face Japan's Tomoka Miyazaki, who is ranked 9th, in the next round.
Other Indian Players' Results
The mixed doubles team of Dhruv Kapila and Olympian Tanisha Crasto also progressed to the next round, defeating Thailand's Tonkid Saeheng and Tonrug Saeheng with a score of 21-8, 21-9 in just 24 minutes. They are set to face Chinese Taipei's Liu Kuang Heng and Hsu Yin-Hui next.
On the other hand, Devika Sihag was eliminated from the women's singles after losing to Bulgaria's Kaloyana Nalbantova with scores of 21-18, 21-15.
In mixed doubles, Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde also faced elimination, losing 21-16, 21-18 to Chinese Taipei's Wu Guan Xun and Lee Chia Hsin.
